Valtellina Superiore

Valtellina Superiore are dry Italian red wines that are produced in the province of Sondrio ( Lombardy region ). They have had the status of a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1968 . In 1998 the wines received the status of a "controlled and guaranteed designation of origin" ( Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita - DOCG), which was last modified on March 7, 2014.

Growing area

The growing area is north of the municipality of Sondrio in the Lombardy region.

generation

The wines are mainly (90-100%) made from the Nebbiolo grape variety , which is also often referred to as "Chiavennasca" on site. 0–10% may come from other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in Lombardy. The wines can also be labeled with one of the five sub-zones (Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, Valgella), the predicate "Riserva" is also possible.

In 2017, 14,324 hectoliters of DOCG wine were produced.

The red wines with the designations "Valtellina Superiore", "Valtellina Superiore ..." (with the identification of the respective sub-zone see above) and "Valtellina Superiore Riserva" must have the following properties:

  • Color: ruby red with a tendency to garnet red
  • Smell: unmistakable aroma, persistent and pleasant
  • Taste: dry and slightly tannic, velvety, harmonious and characteristic
  • Alcohol content: at least 12.0  % by volume
  • Acidity : at least 4.5 g / l
  • Dry extract: at least 23.0 g / l

For the predicate "Riserva", the wines must have matured for at least three years before they can be sold.
