List of grape varieties

Uva Rara is a grape variety that is grown in the Italian regions of Lombardy and Piedmont .

distribution

According to the ampelograph Victor Pulliat, the name Uva Rara (dt. Rare grape ) does not refer to the frequency of its occurrence, but to the extremely beautiful appearance of this variety. Contrary to what the name suggests, this variety is even widespread in Piedmont and Lombardy. For the year 2000, 608 hectares of wooded area were reported. Uva Rara is regionally referred to by a variety of different names, some of which are synonyms, but sometimes also misleading terms. In northern Piedmont the name "Bonarda" is often found (see synonyms), but Uva Rara is not identical to the Bonarda Piemontese grape variety , which ampelographers consider the "real" Bonarda. The Croatina grape variety is also sometimes referred to as Bonarda or Bonarda di Gattinara , but is also not related to Uva Rara.

The grape variety is approved for the DOC / DOCG wines: Boca , Colline Novaresi , Fara , Gattinara , Ghemme , Oltrepò Pavese , San Colombano al Lambro , Sizzano .

In the DOCG wines Gattinara and Ghemme, the variety is often used as a blending partner under the name Bonarda Novarese .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy white wool with a slight pinkish red tinge at the extreme tip. The yellow-green young leaves are only slightly hairy.
  • The large, thick leaves are three to five-lobed and barely curved. The stem bay is closed. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are small compared to other varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium in size and sometimes shouldered. The round berries are large and purple-black in color. The peel of the berry is thin-walled.

The late-ripening variety produces light-colored red wines with low acidity and medium alcohol content.

The grape variety ripens around 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very late. The robust variety sprouts late and can mature for a long time on the vine despite the thin skin. It is also suitable locally as a table grape for fresh consumption.
