List of grape varieties

The white grape variety Trebbiano di Soave is an autochthonous grape variety from northern Italy and belongs to the large family of Trebbiano vines. Its cultivation is recommended in the provinces of Verona and Brescia in the regions of Veneto and Lombardy . In 1999 a planted vineyard area of 2,449 hectares was raised.

The late-ripening variety sprouts late, is vigorous and very productive. The varietal white wines are from straw yellow to golden yellow in color and are of simple quality. The grape variety is used in the DOC - wines Capriano del Colle , Castelli Romani , Colli Berici Garganega , Lugana , Recioto di Soave and Soave . See also the article Viticulture in Italy and the list of grape varieties .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is lightly hairy with white wool and colored light carmine red. The young leaves are lightly hairy and of a yellow-greenish color.
  • The medium-sized leaves are three-lobed (rarely unlobed or five-lobed) and slightly curved. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are closely set compared to other varieties. The leaf surface (also called the leaf blade) is smooth.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium to large, elongated, shouldered and moderately dense. The round berries are medium-sized and green in color. The peel of the berry is thin-walled.

The vigorous grape variety ripens about 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very late.

The Trebbiano family of vines

In the study Genetic studies on Trebbiano and morphologically related varieties by SSR and AFLP markers , published in 2001 , it was found that there are hardly any family ties between the many Trebbiano varieties. Morphologically alone, the varieties share similar characteristics such as the whitish-yellow berry color, the size of the grapes, the late ripeness and the strong vigor. According to a hypothesis by Thomas Hohnerlein-Buchinger from 1996, the name does not come from the Trebulanus variety mentioned by Pliny , but from the Franconian term Draibio , which stands for strong vigor. During the conquest of the Longobard Empire, Charlemagne ensured that fallow vineyards were quickly re-established and recommended vigorous varieties.
