Valdagno is a north-eastern Italian town and municipality ( comune ) with 26,075 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Vicenza in the Veneto region . The place is about 25 kilometers northwest of Vicenza .

The name of the place denotes the valley (Valle) of the river Amnius or Agno or the alder (lat. Alnus ).

history

The place is founded in 861. The first written mention of the name goes back to the year 1179, when the place was given as a fief by the Bishop of Vicenza to the Trissino family. From 1291 to 1340 the place was under the Republic of Venice , then Bernabò Visconti of Milan, 1404 to 1797, when the Republic of Venice dissolved itself in the face of Napoleon's threats , Valdagno was Venetian. At the beginning of the 19th century the place was under French and Austrian rule and from 1866 belonged to the Kingdom of Italy .

Since 1956 the city has had its own library, the Biblioteca civica Villa Valle , today located in the Palace Villa Valle.
