Domenico De 'Paoli

Domenico De 'Paoli (born June 8, 1894 in Valdagno , † September 24, 1984 in Rome ) was an Italian musicologist, music critic and composer.

De 'Paoli was a self-taught musician and only had piano lessons from Gian Francesco Malipiero in Venice from the age of fifteen . In 1920 he met Alfredo Casella , with whom he worked and remained on friendly terms. He later studied musicology with Giulio Bas and Giacomo Benvenuti . From 1923 to 1925 he organized and directed the chamber concerts at the Istituto d'arte e d'alta cultura in Milan. At the same time he began working as a music critic. In 1929 he became editor of the magazine Musica d'oggi .

In 1931 he went to Paris, where he lectured on his research on modern Italian music and met with leading figures from the world of culture. Among other things, he arranged a meeting between Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Luigi Dallapiccola , who wanted to compose music for his Vol de Nuit . In 1940 he returned to Italy. From 1945 to 1950 he worked as a music critic for the magazine Il Giornale della sera , then until 1952 for La Giustizia . He has also written for radio and magazines such as La Rassegna musicale , La Revue musicale , Music and letters , Chesterian and Modern Music .

The focus of his musicological interest was contemporary Italian music, represented by composers such as Ildebrando Pizzetti , Gian Francesco Malipiero , Franco Alfano , Alfredo Casella , Ottorino Respighi and Vincenzo Tommasini . In 1939 his main work La crisi musicale italiana (1900-1930) was published in Rome . He also actively devoted himself to disseminating the works of contemporary composers. In 1944 he premiered Dallapiccola's Sex Carmina Alcaei in Rome .

As a composer, De 'Paoli performed several piano works (including Per una favola serena.
