Giacomo Benvenuti

Giacomo Benvenuti (born March 16, 1885 in Toscolano-Maderno , † January 20, 1943 in Salò ) was an Italian musicologist and editor, composer and organist.

Live and act

Giacomo Benvenuti received his first music lessons from his father, the organist Cristoforo Benvenuti . He continued his education in Brescia and then with Luigi Torchi and Marco Enrico Bossi at the Bologna Music School. During his studies he was friends with the writer Riccardo Bacchelli and Ottorino Respighi and worked several times as an orchestral repetitor for Ferruccio Busoni . He received his diploma as a composer in 1909 and completed his training in Dresden and with Adolf Sandberger in Munich.

Joseph Wilhelm Mengelberg gave his first compositions to Eugen d'Albert , who recommended them to the Schott music publisher in Mainz. Several of his vocal and instrumental compositions were published there between 1909 and 1912, including a collection of piano pieces. The Casa Pizzi printed at this time his Canti ad una voce con accompagnamento di pianoforte . In 1912 he won two music competitions with an overture for large orchestra and a string quartet. In Ricordi 1919 appeared Frammenti di lirici greci for voice and piano and 1929 Tre quartine di Omar Kayyam . With the opera Juan e José , Benvenuti won a prize from the Secolo magazine in Milan in 1928 . The work was never performed or printed, as was a symphony and a symphonic poem.

Even during his student days, however, his main interests were musicology and history. He transcribed works by Giovanni Battista Sammartini , Girolamo Frescobaldi and Marco Antonio Cavazzoni , taught singers and instrumentalists in the performance of early music and gave organ concerts. (with works by Baldassare Galuppi , Ferdinando Bertoni , Vincenzo Manfredini , Giuseppe Antonio Paganelli , Giuseppe Paladini , Pietro Domenico Paradies , Fulgenzio Perotti , Giovanni Pescetti , Giovanni Marco Rutini , Pietro Pompeo Sales , Giovanni Battista Sammartini, Giovanni Battista Serini ).

He was particularly interested in the operas of Claudio Monteverdi, an edition of L'Orfeo for the Teatro Reale dell'Opera was published by Ricordi in 1934, an edition of L'incoronazione di Poppea was published in Milan in 1937. As part of the series Istituzioni e monumenti dell'arte musicale italiana , he published 1931–1932 in two volumes Andrea e Giovanni Gabrieli e la musica strumentale in S. Marco . The series I Classici musicali italiani was designed for sixty volumes, but only the first 15 volumes were realized.
