history

In the Middle Ages Maderno was a town of great political and administrative importance. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dukes of Mantua had their summer residences in the Gonzaga Palace and in the Villa del Serraglio. Paper and other factories had their headquarters in Toscolano since the 14th century. In the gorge of the small river “Toscolano” there is a hiking trail through the historic valley of the paper mills .

In 1902 Toscalano received a rail connection on the Brescia – Salò – Gargnano tram line . In 1921 a line extension via Maderno to Gargnano was inaugurated, but operations on this part were stopped again in 1933. Just one year later, the Sàlo – Toscalano section was closed.

In the 1930s, the Casa Vita Nuova in Toscolano-Maderno was located in what is now the Hotel Milano , a school for Jewish girls from Germany under the direction of the former Berlin study assistant Kurt Wronke. Due to the Italian Racial Laws passed in September 1938, the school had to close and its students and teaching staff had to leave the country.
