history

Torri del Benaco harbor

In the 15th century, Torri del Benaco acquired a special meaning: the municipality was appointed by the Doge of Venice as the headquarters of the Gardesana dell'Acqua . This was an amalgamation of ten municipalities for independent administration and to prevent smuggling to the west bank of the lake.

Benaco is another name for Lake Garda, Italian pronounced Benȧco , Venetian Bėnaco .

  • In Torri del Benaco there is a Scaliger castle , which was built in 1383 to protect the small port by Antonio della Scala (1381-1387). Today the castle houses a kind of local history museum with exhibits on fishing history and olive growing in the area. In 1760 the second curtain wall was torn down to make way for a "Limonaia" (see picture), which can be covered and heated over the winter. The greenhouse is attached to the museum and can be viewed from there. Count Carlo Bettoni-Cazzago, whose villa can be visited in Bogliaco , devoted himself to lemon cultivation on Lake Garda. So that the tropical fruits could survive the winter, he developed the lemon greenhouses at the end of the 18th century. To do this, he drove ten meter high posts into the earth and surrounded them on three sides with wood. This made it possible to successfully grow lemons that were very resistant. In the extremely cold winter of 1928/1929, however, practically all cultures around Lake Garda froze to death, as the Italian military had confiscated the wood of the "Limonaien" at the end of the First World War to build barracks.
  • The small baroque church "Santi Pietro e Paolo" contains a valuable organ, and a carillon plays in the church every day at 7 am, 4 pm and 7 pm.
  • Church of SS. Trinità, Piazza Calderini
  • On the western slope of Monte Bre and Monte Are, above Brancolino, rock carvings can be viewed.

  • There is a year-round car ferry connection to Toscolano-Maderno on the west side of the lake.
