Soave is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 7149 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Verona in the Veneto region . The white wine of the same name, Soave, is named after the city .
geography
The place is about 20 km east of Verona at an altitude of 40 m slm on the southern foothills of the Lessinian Alps. The neighboring municipalities are Belfiore , Cazzano di Tramigna , Colognola ai Colli , Montecchia di Crosara , Monteforte d'Alpone and San Bonifacio . The municipality Soave includes the four fractions Castelletto, Castelcerino, Costeggiola and Fitta.
history
The place is said to have been founded around 500 AD by a tribe of the Suebi , from which the place name is derived. The area had already been settled during the Romans and was located on the important Roman road Via Postumia . The castle was first mentioned in the 10th century. It belonged to the Sanbonifacio from Verona and passed into the possession of the Scaliger in the 13th century . In the following years Soave and his castle changed hands several times. So it belonged after the Scaligern, the Visconti from Milan , the Da Carrara from Padua and reached Venice via the Gonzaga from Mantua at the beginning of the 15th century . The rule of the Serenissima lasted until the Napoleonic era at the end of the 18th century.
