Claye-Souilly is a commune with 12,486 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Seine-et-Marne in the region Ile-de-France ; it belongs to the Arrondissement Meaux and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton Claye-Souilly . The place is about 27 km east of Paris. The inhabitants of the municipality are called Clayois .
geography
Claye-Souilly consists of the quarters Claye , Souilly , Mauperthuis , Voisins , Bois-Fleuri and the industrial area. The Canal de l'Ourcq runs through the municipality .
Neighboring municipalities of Claye-Souilly are Messy and Gressy in the north, Charny in the northeast, Fresnes-sur-Marne and Arnet-sur-Marne in the east, Villevaudé and Le Pin in the south, Villeparisis in the west and Mitry-Mory in the north-west.
history
The municipality has been populated since the Merovingian period at the latest. A priory was established in the 12th century. In 1225 a chapel was built at the instigation of the Châtillon family, who also settled here. During the sixth Huguenot War, the Château of Claye was used by the Catholic troops under King Henry IV and Charles II de Lorraine, duc de Mayenne . In 1833 the previously independent community of Souilly, which was still part of Claye's fief at the time of absolutism, was merged with Claye.
