Guerard is a French commune with 2,480 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-et-Marne in the region Ile-de-France near Paris . The place is in the arrondissement of Meaux and in the canton of Fontenay-Trésigny .
history
Guérard was first mentioned in the 11th century as "Wairar". This is derived from “Vadum Erardi”, which means “ Ford of Evrard”. Tradition has it that the Evrard in question was a guardian of the local ford over the Grand Morin River . The pastor's office was established as early as 1045 . The remains of the fortification of the place date from the 16th century. The main church of Saint-Georges dates back to the 13th century, but was rebuilt in the 16th century and in 1852. The Château de Rouilly-le-Bas dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. Two old water mills are also worth seeing.

Community partnerships
Guérard maintains a partnership with the Westphalian city of Soest . The fact that a relatively small community like Guérard maintains a partnership with the city of Soest is due to personal contacts and the North Rhine-Westphalian municipal area reform of 1969: In 1967 the mayors of the municipality of Guérard and the then still independent municipality of Hattrop signed in the French community a friendship protocol. Contacts on a personal level had existed since shortly after the Second World War , as the Hattroper Fritz Coers had met Pierre Fanton, the son of a French farmer from Guérard, for whom Coers worked, while he was a prisoner of war. Since the municipal reorganization in 1969, Hattrop has been a district of Soest, so the partnership was transferred to the city.
