La Ferte-sous-Jouarre is a French municipality with 9619 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-et-Marne in the region Ile-de-France . The city is about 60 kilometers east of Paris .
history
The city is located at the mouth of the Petit Morin River in the Marne and on the border of the Brie and Champagne .
During the First World War , heavy fighting took place near the city in 1914 and 1918. Because of the exemplary attitude of its population during the German occupation, La Ferté-sous-Jouarre was awarded the Croix de guerre in 1921 .
The Disneyland Resort Paris amusement park has existed in Marne-la-Vallée about 20 km west of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre since 1992 .
Marie Richard (born June 22, 1944 in Budapest) was Mayor of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre from 2001 to 2011. The Socialist Party politician is also Vice-President of the Île-de-France Regional Council, responsible for tourism , leisure and sport . Her party colleague Nathalie Pierre has been in office since 2011.
economy
The place is famous for its deposits of freshwater quartz , which was used as the "French" among the millstones for the highest quality flour.
