Saint-Jean-Baptiste church

Esbly is a French municipality with 6220 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-et-Marne in the region Ile-de-France .

geography

Esbly is eight kilometers northeast of Lagny-sur-Marne . The municipality is crossed by the Marne and Grand Morin rivers .

history

Around 1140 the place is first mentioned as Capela Esbeliaci . The community has had its current name since 1789. In the 13th century, 280 people lived in the village. The first mill was built in the village in 1228, a mill that still exists today dates from 1530. In 1185 the Bishop of Meaux consecrated a first chapel, the current church dates from 1692. Since 1833 there have been efforts to build a railway line from Paris to Strasbourg set up. In 1849 the village got its train station, which led to a strong population growth. 300 to 400 guest workers were brought in from Belgium and the Auvergne to build the railway line. In 1894 the village had 600 inhabitants, there was a post office and a local police station. In 1902 the line to Crécy-la-Chapelle was finally inaugurated. On June 22, 1962, the last steam train passed the Paris-Strasbourg line, it was fully electrified. In 1967 Esbly had 2500 inhabitants, in 1974 there were twice as many.
