Race course
The mountain stages in the Pyrenees , which were held for the first time a year earlier, had proven to be a great journalistic success for the newspaper L'Auto (now L'Équipe ) published by Tour Director Henri Desgrange . Desgrange wanted to increase the difficulty and attractiveness again and came up with the idea of running the race through the high Alps in the Savoie and Isère departments . For the first time, the drivers had to conquer the 2645 meter high Col du Galibier .
Gustave Garrigou won the first stage and was able to take the lead in the overall standings for a second time after the fourth. After Paul Duboc won stages eight and ninth, it seemed only a matter of time before he would knock Garrigou out of the lead. But then Duboc was handed a drinking bottle by a warrior that apparently contained a poisonous substance. He collapsed and had to let Garrigou go away again. It was never found out who had "prepared" the drink in this way. At least he was able to secure second place overall. Duboc's supporters blamed Garrigou for this poisoning and hosted him, so that, at the instructions of the tour management, he continued to drive on, “camouflaged” with sunglasses, the wrong jersey and an unsprayed bike.
56 of 84 drivers did not arrive in Paris, including Octave Lapize , François Faber , Louis Trousselier and Lucien Petit-Breton , who were considered favorites for the overall victory in the run-up.
