The 31st Tour de France took place from June 30th to July 25th 1937 and consisted of 20 stages. The 98 starters had to cover 4,415 km, of which 46 were classified. If you count the time trials and half or third stages driven in one day individually, you come to 31 sections.

Jacques Goddet , as the successor to tour director and founder Henri Desgrange , introduced that drivers were allowed to use a gear shift . This also increased the winner's average speed to a new high of 31.768 km / h.

Race course

After his stage win on the seventh stage, the Italian Gino Bartali also took the lead in the overall standings. Two days later on the Alpine stage to Digne-les-Bains , he fell into a ravine and had to end the race. Only one year later, on the 1938 Tour , he was able to look forward to an overall victory.

Bartali's successor in the yellow jersey was the Belgian Sylvère Maes , for whom eighth place in the stage was enough. This section was won by Roger Lapébie , who later stood at the top of the podium in Paris.

Before Lapébie was able to take over the leading position from Maes, however, he had to wait until the 17th stage: After Maes had received a time penalty of 15 minutes from the tour management because two Belgian participants, who were not part of the Belgian national team, were on Maes had waited.

The Belgian team, which had also lost time when they were held up by a train, closed the race in protest, leaving Lapébie to win the Tour. Although he did not reach the goal after leaving with the Belgian team, Félicien Vervaecke won the award for best climber. France became the best team.
