Vire is a former French commune with 11,091 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017), the Virois , in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy .
On January 1, 2016, Vire was incorporated into the new municipality of Vire Normandie as part of a regional reform together with seven neighboring municipalities . Vire represents the administrative seat of Vire Normandie as the "superordinate district".

Vire is located in the middle of a hilly landscape . The Vire flows through the place coming from the north. Located in the Orne department located Flers is located approximately 28 km southeast of Vire, Saint-Lô in the Manche department about 38 kilometers north-northwest. Avranches is a good 40 km west-southwest, Caen 60 km northeast.
