history
At the beginning of the 19th century, Flers was a small town. In 1806 the place had just 2800 inhabitants. But with the industrial revolution, the population grew and Flers became an economic center in Normandy.
Originally, Flers was a small medieval village, the center of which was its church. Its history goes back to the 12th century. At that time it belonged to the Aunou family who had a castle built. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Flers became the property of the Harcourt family . The village grew and eventually became a barony . Between 1527 and 1541, Baron von Flers had Flers Castle built on the old site . The castle was rebuilt again and again, especially in the 18th century when the Corps de Logis was added. During the uprising of the loyal Chouans in the course of the French Revolution, the castle was initially the seat of the Chouans. However, it was later occupied by the Republicans and set on fire in 1800. In 1820 it was first acquired by a family, in 1901 it became the property of the municipality. From 1820, many textile factories were built in Flers. In June 1944, the Allies decided to bomb the city to stop the German reinforcements. Seventy percent of the city was destroyed. Flers was rebuilt until the 1960s. In addition to the textile industry, Flers has also had an important food industry since the 1970s.
