geography

The municipality is 16 kilometers northwest of the city of Argentan and a few kilometers south of the border with the Calvados department . The area of the commune is traversed by the Baize and the Ruisseau des Monts Hiboux and Fontaine André streams . The neighboring municipalities of Champcerie are Bazoches-au-Houlme in the north, Neuvy-au-Houlme in the northeast, Habloville in the east, Giel-Courteilles in the southeast, Putanges-Pont-Écrepin in the south, Les Rotours in the southwest and Rabodanges in the west.

Thanks to favorable geological factors, horse breeding is located in Champcerie and represents an important branch of the economy.

History and culture

Place name

In 1094 the place was mentioned under the name Cancelsium , which was followed by further mentions under names such as Chancery , Chancelers , Chansserys . It is considered clear that the naming is of Latin origin, even if there are different approaches to the interpretation of the name. According to one theory, it could be a derivation from Campus rivi , which translates as “field by the stream”. Possibly the name is a variation of the Latin expression campus cereris , which would mean "field of Ceres" with a view to the Roman goddess of fertility Ceres . A third hypothesis sees the derivation of Campus Cenerici with reference to the Norman saint Céneri from the 7th century.

Buildings and sights

The village church of Saint-Céneri in the center of the village was built in the 1860s. The interior is formed by a paneled vault and contains cultural assets such as a baptismal font, a Way of the Cross and three wooden altars. One of the altars probably dates from the late 17th century and, like the church's processional cross, was already part of a previously existing prayer house. As a further religious heritage, there are seven different calvaries in the municipality .
