prehistory

Phnom Penh , located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers

Jason Bourne had a troubled past that caught up with him regularly throughout his life. His real name is David Webb; Jason Bourne is just one of his many pseudonyms. Prior to the events in The Bourne Identity , Webb was married to a Thai woman and lived with her and their two children in Phnom Penh , the capital of Cambodia . They were killed when a fighter plane dropped two bombs on Cambodia during the Vietnam War and then shelled a village near the Mekong . In view of the neutrality of Cambodia during the war, however, none of the conflicting parties took responsibility for this incident.

Webb had nothing left to live for. So he traveled to Saigon (today: Ho Chi Minh City ), the then capital of South Vietnam , and began his training in a secret special unit called Medusa under the direction of Alexander Conklin . He was only known there by his code name Delta One . The actual Jason Bourne was a tramp from Tasmania . He was killed on March 25, 1968 by Delta One in a jungle in the north of the Vietnamese province of BìnhĐịnh because he was working as a double agent for the NFB and had betrayed Medusa's position during a rescue mission. Afterwards ( Operation Treadstone ) Webb adopted the name as one of his pseudonyms.

Medusa

On behalf of Medusa , David Webb was recruited during the Vietnam War by his friend Alexander Conklin, a CIA official, after the death of his wife and children. Webb agreed to this because he was stunned by his loss and injustice and he was seeking revenge by joining Medusa . Medusa was originally a death squad developed with the task of parts of North Vietnam to infiltrate and suspected members of the NFB and their collaborators to kill.

The bulk of Medusa's members were made up of criminals led by David Webb, then known as Delta One , who was known for his ruthlessness, disregard of regulations and unsettling success rate of his assignments. This was due, among other things, to the fact that his brother, Gordon Webb, Lieutenant in the United States Army , was kidnapped during his deployment in Saigon .

During the mission to save David Webb's brother, a member of Medusa named Jason Charles Bourne was exposed as a double agent for the NFB. During the rescue mission, he had revealed the positions of the task force to the North Vietnamese soldiers. After Delta One found out about it, he killed Bourne in a jungle in the north of the province of Bình Định because he had endangered the mission. Since Medusa is a secret special unit, the killing was never officially announced and Bourne was considered missing.

Operation Treadstone

The CIA formed a covert operation called Treadstone71 , named for a building on 71st Street in New York , with the aim of killing Carlos the Jackal . Webb was appointed as its general agent by the founder of Medusa and Treadstone , David Abbott - also known as "The Silent Monk of Covert Operations". Since then, Webb has called himself Jason Bourne , even though he knew the actual Bourne was a ruthless murderer with a long criminal record.

Furthermore, there are other international passports, a large amount of different currencies and a pistol in the locker. He tries to find out his true identity step by step while he has to face murder attempts by CIA agents. Ultimately, he finds out that he, too, is such an agent whose last assignment went wrong. About two years after finding out he was an agent on the program and severing contact with the CIA, Jason Bourne is haunted by memories of one of his most recent missions. An assassination attempt leads to Marie's death, and he decides to seek revenge by hunting down those responsible for her death and his forgotten past. Bourne discovers that Ward Abbott ( Brian Cox ), one of the men overseeing Operation Treadstone, the program that turned Bourne into an agent, stole millions of dollars from the CIA. Abbott wanted to blame Bourne for the embezzlement and believes Bourne was killed as intended. Bourne exposes Abbott in front of Pamela Landy ( Joan Allen ), the CIA agent hired to find Bourne, and Abbott commits suicide. During a long chase, the Russian agent who was paid to kill Bourne and who is responsible for Marie's death is killed and Bourne disappears underground.

The Bourne ultimatum

Six weeks later, Bourne notices that a British journalist is investigating his past and contacts him to find out who his source is. Bourne then becomes the target of Operation Blackbriar, an expanded version of Operation Treadstone that has also been investigated. Believing Bourne is a danger and seeking vengeance, Blackbriar's leader Noah Vosen ( David Strathairn ) begins another hunt for Bourne. Bourne manages to get secret documents that prove that Blackbriar was aimed at US citizens. He gets help from Landy, who disagreed with Vosen from the start and doesn't support Blackbriar's existence, and former Treadstone logistician Nicky Parsons ( Julia Stiles ), who, as she implies, had a more intimate relationship before Bourne's memory loss had with Bourne. Ultimately, Bourne comes face to face with the person who a few years earlier oversaw his behavior adjustment as the first Treadstone agent. Those responsible for Treadstone and Blackbriar are exposed and Bourne disappears underground.

The Blackbriar and Treadstone Programs became public, prompting the FBI and the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence to determine who was responsible.
