Matt Damon took on the role of Jason Bourne again, as in the first three parts of the series . Julia Stiles , Alicia Vikander , Vincent Cassel and Tommy Lee Jones can be seen at his side .

The film was released in American cinemas on July 29, 2016, and in Germany on August 11, 2016.

action

Jason Bourne lives in the Greek-Albanian border area from his participation in illegal fistfighting. In Reykjavík , Nicky Parsons , who has been allied with him since The Bourne Ultimatum , penetrates the CIA's central server from a computer room belonging to Christian Dassault's group of hacktivists . The data obtained also contain new information about Bourne, whom she subsequently locates in Athens . Bourne and Parsons exchange ideas during a street battle between protesters and the police in Syntagma Square . They find that the CIA has been watching and tracking Parsons since their hack. While on the run, Parsons is shot dead by a CIA killer - called Asset - who turns out to be a member of the former Blackbriar program .

Bourne escapes and goes to Berlin to find Dassault, who can open the data carrier given by Parsons. Bourne learns that his father developed the secret CIA program Treadstone and may have been involved in its recruitment. The CIA was able to locate Bourne's location and delete the data through malware that was placed on Parson's data carrier by the CIA cyber crime specialist, Heather Lee. With Lee's help, who is convinced that he can win him again for the CIA, Bourne again escapes the approaching killer teams. He visits a former Treadstone employee in London , Malcolm Smith, from whom he hopes to learn the truth about his father.

Lee would like to take this opportunity to meet Bourne in person. Her boss, CIA director Robert Dewey, agrees, but secretly plans to murder Bourne. On Dewey's behalf, Asset shoots the teams led by Lee, but can not meet Bourne in a turmoil he has triggered on Paddington Plaza . Bourne learns from Smith that although his father designed the concept for Treadstone , he wanted to prevent his son from being recruited and was murdered by Asset on Dewey's behalf. When Bourne can locate Lee in the chaos of the failed Operation, she suggests that they work together against Dewey.

He is supposed to meet Aaron Kalloor, the charismatic founder of a large social media platform , in a hotel in Las Vegas during a symposium . According to a secret agreement between Dewey and Kalloor, their data will be used by the CIA for mass surveillance. Because Kalloor wants to get out, he is said to be shot by Asset during the event. There is a big showdown; With Lee's help, Bourne can prevent the assassination attempt and catch Dewey. Lee shoots Dewey and saves Bourne's life, who then diverts suspicion from her. Asset escapes, is pursued by Bourne, and is trapped in a sewer after a chase through the Las Vegas Strip . During the fight between the two agents, Bourne manages to kill Asset.

Heather Lee is applying to Dewey's supervisor, Director of National Intelligence Edwin Russell, to succeed him as CIA director. She makes it clear that she still wants to bring Bourne back or otherwise liquidate him. She meets Bourne and promises to make the CIA the kind of intelligence he was applying for as David Webb. Bourne asks for time to think about it, but leaves her a tape: It becomes clear that he has overheard her conversation with Russell and realized her real intentions.

development

In May 2007, prior to the release of The Bourne Ultimatum , lead actor Matt Damon announced that he was not interested in returning for a fourth Bourne film. In his opinion, Jason Bourne's search for his identity was over, as he had already found all the answers. At the time, however, he also stated that things might look very different in ten years. Should director Paul Greengrass then contact him with a new, good idea, with which Jason Bourne could be brought back, there would be an absolute interest on his part. From 2008 the fourth part was in production. The Bourne Legacy was released in 2012, directed by Tony Gilroy and without Damon or Greengrass. Instead, Jeremy Renner took on the lead role of Aaron Cross.

In December 2012, Damon and Greengrass expressed an interest in a fifth Jason Bourne film. The deal was confirmed on September 15, 2014 and saw Damon return to his roles as Jason Bourne and Paul Greengrass as director. It was also confirmed that Renner would take up his role as Aaron Cross in a future film. For the film, Viggo Mortensen was briefly in discussion for the role of the antagonist . Alicia Vikander took on the role of a cyber specialist for the CIA and turned down a role in Assassin's Creed (2016).

Filming

In August 2015, producers tried to get Clark County's permission to film on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas . To do this, Las Vegas Boulevard would have had to be closed for several hours a day for seven to ten days. It is still unclear whether this permit was granted.

Filming began on September 8, 2015. In November 2015, filming took place outside Paddington Station in London . Most of the action scenes during the street riots in Athens were shot in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Other locations were Berlin-Kreuzberg , Woolwich Arsenal train station in London and Washington, DC

criticism

The film received mixed reviews from the critics. He was able to convince 56 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes . On Metacritic he received a Metascore of 58 out of 100.

The film service wrote: "The suspenseful thriller deepens the topics of surveillance state and cyber espionage established in the previous films of the" Bourne "series and entertains in the best possible way as a mixture of sophisticated car chases and spectacular action scenes."

Frank Schnelle gave film starts 3 out of 5 stars in his review and summed up: “For the fifth“ Bourne ”adventure, Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass have returned after the controversial interlude“ The Bourne Legacy ”. Your renewed hunt for memory fragments is completely convincing in terms of craftsmanship, but doesn’t seem particularly inspired or original. "

The TV magazine Prisma wrote : "Not only does lead actor Matt Damon return for" Jason Bourne ", but Paul Greengrass as well. Only for this reason did he take on the role of top agent again. After the somewhat weaker " The Bourne Legacy ", in which Jeremy Renner took the lead role, "Jason Bourne" picks up where " The Bourne Ultimatum " left off. The film offers fast-paced action, breathtaking car chases and fights in a class of its own. The thriller convinces with an exciting story and famous actors. In addition to Matt Damon and Julia Stiles, these are the newcomers Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassel. "Jason Bourne" is a successful continuation of the franchise. "

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".

Trivia

Kollwitzplatz is to be represented in the scene in Berlin . The square with this name is located in Prenzlauer Berg , but the film was shot near the Schlesisches Tor in front of the Oberbaum Bridge .

The film makes some references and allusions to real events, such as the protests on Syntagma Square during the Greek sovereign debt crisis . The leader of the hacktivists, Christian Dassault, is seen by several critics as an allusion to Julian Assange , the charismatic social network founder Aaron Kalloor as Mark Zuckerberg .

continuation

In October 2019, producer Ben Smith confirmed they were working on a sixth Bourne film, but did not reveal whether Matt Damon would return to his role. He also promised connections to the spin-off television series Treadstone .
