from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viktor Anatoljewitsch Kowarski ( Russian Виктор Анатольевич Коварский ; born December 31, 1929 in Charkow ; † July 4, 2000 in Chisinau ) was a Soviet - Moldovan theoretical physicist , biophysicist and university lecturer .

Life

Kowarski was the son of the well-known plant breeder Anatoli Efimowitsch Kowarski and the agronomist Dora Abramovna, née Kleiman. The family lived in Cherson since 1935 and then in the evacuation in Frunze during the German-Soviet war . In 1944 the family settled in Chisinau when the father was appointed to the chair for plant breeding and seed breeding at the local agricultural college . Viktor Kowarski graduated from Middle School No. 3 there (together with the physiologist Jakow Abramowitsch Altman and the oncologist Israil Fischelewitsch Eisman ).

In 1952 Kowarski graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Moldovan State University in Chisinau. His thesis was supervised by Juri Perlin . In 1952 he married his fellow student Brigitta Orenstein . The physical chemist Isaak Bersuker and the mathematician Israel Gohberg were his friends.

After graduation, Kowarski worked from 1952 to 1960 as a lecturer in the Faculty of Higher Mathematics and Theoretical Mechanics at the Kischinau Agricultural College. In 1954 he began to publish . In 1959 he successfully defended his candidate dissertation at the Kiev Institute of Physics, Investigations on the Theory of Generation and Recombination of Electrons in Semiconductors . In 1961 he moved to the Moldavian Academy of Sciences and worked as senior assistant from 1961 to 1963 in the Institute of Mathematics and 1963 to 1969 in the Institute of Applied Physics . In 1969 he became head of the Laboratory for Physical Kinetics . In 1970 he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at the Kiev Institute for Theoretical Physics, Theory of Much Quantum Processes in Crystals . In 1971 he was appointed professor. In 1972 the Moldovan Academy of Sciences elected him a Corresponding Member, and in 1992 he became a full member. He headed the academy councils for biophysics , theoretical and mathematical physics, optoelectronics and semiconductor physics and technology . In 1995 he retired .

Kowarski's main areas of work were the kinetics of many quantum processes in condensed matter physics , quantum biophysics, synergetics , effects of ultrashort laser irradiation, and molecular biology . He established the resonance-like dependence of the speed of a chemical reaction on the atomic coordinates .

1999 appeared in Chisinau Kowarskis prose - and verse - autobiography The arrow of time of my life .

With his wife Brigitta, Kowarski had two children, the physicist and electronics technician Yevgeni and the pediatrician and neuropathologist Larissa. Kowarski's brother, Valentin, was an agronomist and physiologist .
