Israel Gohberg ( Hebrew ישראל גוכברג; Russian Израиль Цудикович Гохберг ; *  August 23, 1928 in Tarutino , Bessarabia ; † October 12, 2009 in Kfar Saba ) was a Soviet-Israeli mathematician who dealt with functional analysis and matrix theory.

Live and act

Gohberg went to school in Frunze (today: Bishkek ) in Kyrgyzstan . He then studied at the Kishinev University in the Moldavian SSR, founded in 1945, and at the Leningrad University , where he did his doctorate in 1954 under Mark Krein ( candidate thesis ).

He completed his habilitation at the Lomonossow University in Moscow (Russian: Doctor of Science ). He then taught at the Pedagogical University in Belzy and Soroki in Moldova before becoming a professor in Kishinev and a member of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (1964).

In 1969 he decided to emigrate to Israel, but he and his family did not receive visas until 1974. In Israel he was a professor at Tel Aviv University and at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot . In 1983 he became a professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam . He was visiting professor at the University of Calgary and the University of Maryland in College Park , among others .

Gohberg dealt with integral equations and operator theory. He was a co-founder of the journal "Integral Equations and Operator Theory". He published over 500 papers and supervised over 40 doctoral students.

In 1992 he received the Humboldt Research Prize , and in 2008 the Mark Grigoryevich Kerin Prize . He received an honorary doctorate from TU Darmstadt in 1997, from TU Wien in 2001 , from the University of the West Timișoara in 2002 and from Technion in 2008 . In 1993 he received the Hans Schneider Prize .

Gohberg lived in Ra'anana with his wife Bella and their two daughters ; he died in Kafr Saba Meir Hospital after a long illness.
