Siegfried Proessdorf

Siegfried Prößdorf (born January 2, 1939 in Baldenhain in Thuringia , † July 19, 1998 ) was a German mathematician who dealt with analysis and numerical mathematics.

Prößdorf graduated from high school in Ronneburg in 1957 and then studied at the University of Leipzig and the University of Saint Petersburg , where he graduated in 1963 (“summa cum laude”) and in 1966 did his doctorate under Solomon Grigorjewitsch Michlin . Then he was a research assistant at the TU Chemnitz , where he completed his habilitation in 1967 (one-dimensional singular integral equations and non-normal type convex equations in locally convex spaces). In 1969 he became a full professor of analysis there. In 1972 he was visiting professor at the Mathematics Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Kishinew (now Moldova ), where he met Israel Gohberg . From 1975 to 1984 he was head of the Department of Applied Analysis and Computational Mathematics at Karl Weierstrass Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin , where he also after the turn of the 1990s in nunmehrigen Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics was and headed the research group integral equations and pseudo differential equations.

Prößdorf dealt with integral equations, partial differential equations (and pseudo differential operators), operator theory, finite element methods and numerical analysis.

In 1980 he received the GDR National Prize .

He translated several books by his teacher Michlin into German.
