electronics technician
Electronics technician is an apprenticeship in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . In Germany, “electronics technician” is also a generic term for various professions in electrical engineering and electronics, both in trade and industry.
The profession is a classic male domain . In 2010, the proportion of women in training and professional practice was not more than 12%.
Germany
In Germany there are several apprenticeships with different orientations in addition to the skilled trade "electronics technician".
The professions are recognized by the ordinance of July 4, 2003 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 1144 ) or July 2008, industrial electrical professions that can be practiced in both craft and industry. Depending on the company and specialization, electronics technicians can work, for example, in the field of high-voltage technology , production and assembly (device production, circuit board production, etc.), switch cabinet construction, data processing or communications technology .
In the craft these are:
- Electronics technician for automation technology (craft)
- Electronics technician for energy and building technology
- Electrician , the predecessor of the electronics technician - energy and building technology
- Electronics technician - information u. Telecommunication technology
- Information electronics technician
- System electronics technician
and in industry :
- Electronics technician for automation technology (industry) Electronics technician for industrial engineering
- Electronics technician for devices and systems
- Electronics technician for machines and drive technology
- Electronics technician for aviation systems
- Electronics technician for building and infrastructure systems
as well as indirectly
- Electronics technician for information and systems technology (formerly system IT specialist)
since based on the same regulation.
All of these training occupations have in common that they are three and a half years old and specialization begins in the second year of training. So the first year is the same.
Electronics technicians are trained in the company and attend vocational school ( dual training system ) during their training .
In Germany, trainees who have successfully completed vocational school and, depending on the federal state, take additional German or English courses, obtain the secondary school leaving certificate .
Various disciplines are considered to be shortage occupations for skilled workers in Germany and are on the positive list for foreign skilled workers from non-EU countries.
Vocational school lessons
Vocational school lessons are theoretical training at vocational schools. Theoretical specialist knowledge is imparted in learning fields; In addition to mathematics, there are also German, English, (philosophy), social studies and sport. After two years of basic training, an electronics technician should have acquired the necessary specialist knowledge to be able to use it in a variety of ways.
Austria
On June 1, 2011, the electrician professions in Austria were combined to form the electronics module.
- Basic module (2 years)
- electronics
- Main module (1.5 years)
- Electrician for energy and building technology
- Electrician for machines and systems
- Applied electronics
- Microtechnology
- Communication electronics
- Information and communication technology
- Special module (0.5 years)
- network technology
- Railway telecommunications technology
predecessor
The vocational training lasts three and a half years and Austria there with the emphasis on "Applied Electronics" or "micro technology".
Switzerland
Names
Since January 1, 2009, the apprenticeship in Switzerland has been called “Electronics Technician” with a federal certificate of proficiency (EFZ).
Previously, the job was simply called “electronics technician”, a distinction being made between level G (basic requirements) and E (extended requirements (E)).
further previous name:
- Telecommunications, electrical and equipment fitter (abbreviated FEAM, Switzerland, training discontinued)
- Electronics fitters (Switzerland, training discontinued)
Course of training
The vocational training lasts four years. Electronics technicians are trained in the company and attend vocational school during their training . Additional training locations are inter-company courses in the first half of the apprenticeship . These courses have a minimum of 36 and a maximum of 64 days, with 8 hours per day.
Practical training
During the first half of the apprenticeship, a broad foundation of knowledge and skills is laid in the basic training . The focus calculating, sizing, constructing and sizing of electronic circuits , documenting the work, installation and wiring of equipment, loading and soldering of printed circuit boards as well as start-up and Troubleshooting. In addition, it is taught how microcomputer systems and programs ( firmware ) are written and tested. Furthermore, depending on the vocational school, the training can include the areas of PLC and robot programming .
The basic training is completed with the partial examination in the areas of production engineering, switching and measurement technology and microcontrollers.
In the second half of the apprenticeship, the focus is on training in the company's areas of activity. In this training phase, the apprentices deepen their knowledge and skills through exemplary learning on productive assignments and projects. During the entire training period, interdisciplinary skills such as learning and working methodology, creativity, flexibility, teamwork, independence, communication skills, etc. are promoted.
Vocational school lessons

Without vocational secondary school, mathematics (technical basics), physics (scientific basics), general education (language and communication), English and sport are added. After two years of basic training, an electronics technician should have acquired the necessary specialist knowledge to be able to use it in a variety of ways.
Professional baccalaureate
If they pass the entrance exam, Swiss apprentices can attend vocational secondary school and complete it with the vocational school-leaving certificate.
Career prospects
After completing the apprenticeship and with the skilled worker certificate (Germany) or federal certificate of proficiency (Switzerland), electronics technicians have many opportunities for further training.
Amongst other things:
- (higher technical School
- University (Abitur or Matura required)
