history

The station was opened in 1849 by the South Eastern Railway . The station building was replaced twice by a new building: in 1906 by a brick building, and in 1996 by a modern steel and glass construction. On behalf of Transport for London , a branch of the Docklands Light Railway has been extended to this point. A tunnel was created that crosses under the Thames from King George V station . Construction work began in June 2005 and was opened on January 12, 2009.

During the 2012 Summer Olympics , Woolwich Arsenal was a target for visitors to the shooting competitions at the nearby Royal Artillery Barracks .

As part of the Crossrail project , an underground station is being built around 200 meters to the north for this S-Bahn connection through the city center. It is scheduled to open in December 2018. There will be no direct transition to the new train station.
