The Woolwich Station is a property under construction railway station in London . It is being built in the Woolwich district of the Royal Borough of Greenwich . From December 2018 it will be served by Crossrail trains on the Abbey Wood branch of the Elizabeth Line. It is located in a section of tunnel around 200 meters north of Woolwich Arsenal station , with no direct crossing.

investment

The station is 14 m below the surface and is 276 m long. It is part of an extensive urban development project on the site of the former Royal Arsenal . The real estate company Berkeley Homes is building a mixed residential and business district with 2517 apartments (in addition to the 1248 apartments that had already been built in an earlier construction phase) on an area of around 30 hectares on the south bank of the Thames .

The entrance to the newly designed Dial Arch Square consists of a 30 m wide portal clad in bronze . Through it and the glazed roof, natural daylight falls into the main hall and partly onto the platform. The modern and minimalist design of the station contrasts with the numerous listed buildings in the vicinity. For the design, companies are Weston Williamson and Arup responsible for the construction Balfour Beatty .

Planning and construction

In the early planning phases of Crossrail, the construction of a train station in Woolwich was not actually planned. That changed with intense lobbying from the Royal Borough of Greenwich administration and Berkeley Homes' pledge to contribute to the £ 162 million cost. The responsible committee of the House of Commons then decided in March 2007 to include the station in the project. Construction work began in 2013, with the shell of the actual train station being built first and the adjacent tunnels not being built until 2014. The opening is planned for December 2019.
