Treadstone is an American action series that aired on USA Network from October to December 2019 . Outside the US, the series was released on Prime Video on January 10, 2020 . The series is about the eponymous CIA program known from the Bourne film series .

production

In April 2018, USA Network ordered a pilot episode for a series about the CIA program Treadstone, known from the Bourne film series . It was announced that the series will follow sleeper agents of the program around the globe and show their awakening and their missions. Tim Kring was hired as a screenwriter , while Ramin Bahrani directed the pilot episode. In addition to Kring and Bahrani, Ben Smith , Jeffrey Weiner , Justin Levy and Bradley Thomas also act as executive producers . In August 2018, the television station gave the green light for the series. At the same time it was reported that Amazon is in advanced negotiations about the international distribution rights and will therefore be involved in the production, the start of which has been announced for 2019.

In November 2018, Jeremy Irvine and Brian J. Smith were signed to two leading roles. In preparation for the role that was not yet safe for him at the time, Irvine voluntarily took part in a 10-day admission test for the Special Air Service , during which, according to his own statements, he was kept awake for several days, isolated, starved and tortured with noises. In January 2019, shortly after the main filming began in Budapest , five other actors joined the main cast: Tracy Ifeachor , Omar Metwally , Han Hyo-joo , Gabrielle Scharnitzky and Emilia Schüle . The last to be announced in June 2019 were the commitments of Michelle Forbes , Patrick Fugit , Michael Gaston , Tess Haubrich and Shruti Haasan . All actors had to go through a training program in preparation for filming in Beijing , which, among other things, ensured that they had the right diet. Even so, the actors got into the production at different times. For example, filming for Irvine didn't start until the end of May 2019.

In total, the filming took around nine months, and the production team always wanted to shoot at the locations of the series whenever possible. Because of this, Ben Smith said he traveled over 250,000 miles while filming. Among other things, the production team was allowed to film in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles Palace , for which the scripts would have to be submitted first. Most of the scenes from Hyo-joo set in North Korea were shot in Seoul . Also in Alaska settled shots of Smith did not occur in the US state but were instead on Spitsbergen filmed. Due to the prevailing cold there, takes in which the actors' skin could be seen could have a maximum length of 45 seconds. Haasan's scenes, which are based in India , were actually shot in Delhi , including at the Jama Masjid . Further recordings were made in Taiwan , Amsterdam , Colombia , Greece , Ghana and France .

A first trailer was released on August 10, 2019. A little later, the US launch date for the ten episode first season was dated October 15, 2019. A special screening of the first episode took place on September 24th . Even if the number of viewers for the individual episodes was below average, the series saw massive growth in the so-called time - shifted viewing. For example, the first two episodes were viewed 1.84 and 1.97 million times in the first seven days of airing. At the beginning of October 2019 it was announced that the series would appear in over 200 countries on Prime Video in January 2020 . In the United States, the series was released on DVD on March 24, 2020 . In May 2020, USA Network announced the cancellation of the series after the first season.

The CIA agent John Randolph Bentley had the assignment to find the former Nazi scientist Dr. Meisner, who now works for the Soviet Union, to kill. After the mission failed, he fell into captivity by the KGB and was forced to take part in the “Cicada” program in East Berlin, which aimed to control the behavior of the subjects and turn them into weapons.

At present, CIA agent Ellen Becker and her colleague Matt Edwards are organizing a meeting in London between North Korean General Kwon and former journalist Tara Coleman. Kwon informs her that a North Korean splinter group from the Soviet Union wants to buy the launch codes for the Stiletto Six Soviet nuclear missile that has appeared on the black market. At the same time he reveals to her that the CIA has reactivated the Treadstone program and is starting to wake up the "cicadas". Doug McKenna, stationed on an oil rig in the Beaufort Sea, and SoYun Pak, based in Pyongyang , are gradually being activated. Pak is first assigned to take down General Kwon. At the same time it is revealed that Petra Andropov, who died in 1973 with Dr. Meisner worked together, is in possession of the nuclear missile.

1973: After Bentley fled to West Berlin, he visits a CIA branch and is asked by his superior Dennis Kohler to report as much as possible about his nine-month imprisonment. After explaining the methods of Cicada, Kohler suspects him to have been sent back by the Soviets as a double agent, whereupon Bentley is able to flee the building. At the same time, Petra is contacted by the KGB and asked to locate Bentley so that Bentley cannot forward any information about the government-sponsored program to the USA.

In the present, Becker and Edwards decide to prevent the sleeper agents from being activated. To do this, Edwards seeks out former Treadstone behavioral psychologist Martin Wells, who could possibly have information about what is currently going on. At a meeting between the two of them, Wells admits to having been involved in the development of Cicada and to knowing about its activation. In the meantime, Tara Coleman fulfills General Kwon's last wish in Paris: she tracks down his daughter, informs her of current events and tries to bring her to the Ecuadorian embassy to be safe from killers sent from North Korea. It turns out that General Kwon was exposed as a traitor by Dae Pak, SoYun's husband, for which the latter was promoted to a missile project by the military. At the same time, Petra removes the traces of her murder and then travels to Moscow to contact old KGB acquaintances of her. Doug McKenna, however, flies to his home in Kentucky after his release.

1973: Bentley visits the KGB research laboratory in East Berlin again, but finds that the facility has withdrawn from the location. When he contacts his former partner Frank Ferguson, Bentley admits that he unknowingly killed three CIA agents within the Cicada program. Ferguson reports this confession to his superior, Kohler, who then shoots him and instructs Bentley to track down the fugitive Petra.

In the present, Coleman managed to get General Kwon's daughter to the Ecuadorian embassy just in time. There, an employee confirms that a North Korean splinter group actually wants to acquire the launch codes for the nuclear missile, and gives her the decryption software for these so that Coleman can secure the codes. Meanwhile, SoYun finds out that her husband's new employer is the said splinter group. Shortly thereafter, she is contacted by Colonel Li, who reveals that he has evidence to back up her murder of Kwon. In exchange for his silence, he demands that during a work party for her husband, she swap the SIM card of Dae Pak's supervisor Colonel Shin's cell phone so that the betrayal can be proven. Meanwhile, Petra receives a visit from a contract killer in Moscow, but she can kill her. As it turns out, the wife was sent by Petra's ex-boyfriend, Yuri Leniov, for whom she kept Stiletto Six for over 24 years. Meanwhile, in the USA, Edwards and Wells visit Stephen Haynes, who is in prison. Her suspicion that he is also a sleeper agent and that this was the reason for his murder of six people in a gas station, is confirmed shortly afterwards by Haynes personally.

When Haynes was questioned again, Wells was able to use hypnosis to call up further memories in the agent. Haynes, however, goes nuts, kills Wells, knocks Edwards out and can then flee. Thereupon the FBI initiates a large manhunt for the fugitive, in which Edwards can put Haynes. In return for information, Edwards promises the sleeper agent a meeting with his daughter. At the same time, Doug McKenna is surprised by a burglar in his house and rescued by his wife Samantha, who shoots the man. After the two of them buried the body together in a forest, Doug finds a picture in the man's suitcase that he has already seen in Alaska. He reveals to his wife that he cannot remember the evening after his release, but that he woke up the next morning with bloodied hands. Recognizing the signs, Samantha admits that she worked for the CIA's Treadstone program for three years, including training him. She also explains to him that the picture in the victim's suitcase is an assignment that he has to carry out. Meanwhile, Colonel Shin finds out that SoYun should be bugging him, whereupon he shoots her blackmailer, Colonel Li. As it turns out, Shin is the one delivering the missions to SoYun. He assures her that she will ensure the safety of her family and at the same time organizes her undercover exit to China.

1973: Bentley searches for Petra in Budapest and finds recordings of his actions in his old apartment when he was under the control of the KGB. In a bar he meets Katya, who is able to convince him that he will find his answers under the influence of drugs.

At present, SoYun can cross the border river between North Korea and China, but it kills a border guard. In China, she meets agent Nira Patel, who is charged with taking down SoYun. Upon handing over documents, she discovers that her husband's secret plans are about Stiletto Six. A fight ensues between the women in which Nira shoots SoYun in the stomach. At the same time, McKenna helps a mercenary force in Kentucky to commit a robbery on a drug factory. His actual target is the head of the facility, which he kills, as his job requires, but is seen by his former colleague Mike. Meanwhile, Coleman visits her old friend Sebastian Blair in Ghana, who is now in prison. Through him she would like to establish contact with Yuri Leniov in order to be able to acquire the shooting codes for Stiletto Six. Since one cannot make a phone call from the prison, Coleman and an allied prison guard set up that a fellow inmate does not kill Blair in a life-threatening manner, so that Blair has to be driven to a hospital.

In the present, the seriously wounded SoYun is dragging herself to a nearby village where she is treated by a doctor. A little later, after completing her mission, she starts her journey home. In her apartment she meets Colonel Shin, who sends her a new mission. At the same time, McKenna in Kentucky was betrayed by Mike to the police, which is why he is on the run. He comes into contact with a man who appears to be more deeply involved in various organizations and operations. Meanwhile, Edwards and Haynes, wanted by Becker, arrive at the house of the sleeper agent. There they are intercepted, however, and Haynes realizes that one of the people is the woman who woke him up, whereupon he kills her. Edwards sends a photo of the body to Becker, who identifies the dead person as a CIA agent, whereupon she orders Edwards to kill Haynes. At the same time, her supervisor Dan Levine sends a team to take down the renegade Edwards.

1973: In Budapest Bentley learns from Petra that the CIA agent Matheson, whom he interrogated and tortured during his training within the Cicada project, is still alive. When Bentley decides to track down his colleague, Petra joins him. Since the CIA now thinks that Bentley has defected to the enemy, they send an agent that Bentley can take out, but who still manages to attach a tracking device to him. A little later, Petra admits that Dr. Meisner is still alive and the Cicada project including Matheson has been moved to another, secret location.

In the present, Coleman tries together with Blair and her friend Meghan Addo to establish contact with Yuri Leniov. The trio are kidnapped by strangers shortly afterwards, Addo is shot and Coleman is forced to transfer a large sum of money. Both prisoners are then released. At the same time, Petra locates Leniov on Mykonos and confronts him about what he is planning to do with Stiletto Six. When he reveals to her that he wants to sell the rocket to North Korea, she is disappointed in him because she kept Stiletto Six in secret for her country for over 24 years. Meanwhile, SoYun overhears Colonel Shin telling him about an upcoming meeting with the Russians. Informed about the place and date, SoYun decides to infiltrate the meeting as well. Meanwhile, Doug and Samantha McKenna prepare for their impending escape from their old lives. They decide to save the life of a target chosen by Treadstone officials, but an explosion occurs when Doug enters the house of the possible victim.

Doug and Sam can no longer save the victims of the attack, but they can eliminate the agent Victor, who is responsible for the explosion. As a result, Doug decides to impersonate Victor to the pullers and fake his own death in order to distract from his trail. At the same time, SoYun came into contact with Yuri Leniov in Seoul , South Korea . After placing a microphone, she overhears the sales talk between the former KGB agent and Colonel Shin. When Leniov reveals that the nuclear warhead is on its way to Cyprus, SoYun opens fire, cutting off the conversation and then flees to the American embassy. Meanwhile, Edwards and Haynes are tracked down, pursued and eventually surrounded by Beckers. With the threat that Haynes kills all CIA forces, Edwards gets his life, but Haynes is supposedly still executed on the spot. Meanwhile, Coleman is looking for answers about Yuri Leniov in Moscow. With a couple of hacker friends she managed to break into a Russian military archive, where she received information about the Cicada project and heard from Petra Andropov for the first time. Before Coleman visits the former agent, she also informs Edwards, who is now being bugged by the CIA, about her plan.

1973: Petra arranges a meeting between Leniov and Bentley in which the latter pretends to be a willing agent of the Cicada program. That is why Leniov sends Bentley to Dr. Meisner in Romania, where he meets Matheson. Bentley can evoke memories of his past and family in his former colleague, now manipulated by the KGB, whereupon they both break out of the facility and shoot Meisner in the process.

In the present, Doug takes on the role of agent Victor and travels to Colombia on a mission. His wife Samantha, however, returns to Treadstone so as not to draw attention to him. At the same time, Edwards contacted Interpol and reported on the CIA's internal Treadstone conspiracy. Levine, who oversees Edwards, then decides to tell Becker the whole truth about Treadstone, which is secretly carried on by the CIA, and to win her over to the project. He also realizes from the information from SoYun from South Korea that he was betrayed by Yuri Leniov. Originally he had contracted him and reported that there was a possibility of opening the world market for North Korea. In order to promote the political overthrow, the CIA then eliminated General Kwon, who supposedly stood in the way of the project. As it now turns out, however, the CIA helped to thread a nuclear missile deal and a coup in North Korea. Since Levine and Becker know from SoYun that the nuclear warhead will be brought to Cyprus, they activate another cicada: Tara Coleman. This was shown shortly before by Petra the Stiletto Six rocket dismantled by Leniov.

1973: Petra is found by the Bentley tracking device by the CIA, captured and asked to divulge her knowledge of the Cicada project. This is how she learns that she was just a mission for Bentley, for whom she left the KGB behind.

Under the leadership of Levine and Becker, the CIA is tracking how their forces in Cyprus secure the nuclear warhead. At the same time they have to realize that Coleman, who got information about Leniov from Petra, fails in her mission to kill the former KGB agent. The latter then contacted a US senator who apologized for the unauthorized operation and then sent Nira Patel to take Levine off. A little later Becker is contacted by the same senator to talk about the continuation of Treadstone. She had previously secretly sent Coleman to Amsterdam, where Edwards was going to meet the Interpol manager. The meeting is prevented by the CIA and the reprogrammed, still living Haynes from Edwards is scheduled. Ultimately, Coleman shoots him, who then escapes with Edwards. Meanwhile, SoYun returns to her family in Pyongyang, where her ignorant husband informs her that Colonel Shin has allegedly recruited her son to protect herself from the same program that SoYun went through in her youth. At the same time, Doug has to decide in Colombia whether he will kill a possible revolutionary leader, thereby strengthening the influence of the USA in the country, but at the same time putting his wife out of danger, or whether he will finally renounce killing. At the end you can see Petra visiting Bentley in the present.

Reviews

The series was able to convince 44% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 47 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

CNN's Brian Lowry is largely positive about Treadstone . The series started well and could arouse the interest of the audience. The mythology of the films offers the basis for a solid, if chaotic series. Treadstone manages to combine the quality of good TV series with the paranoia known from the original. At the same time, new characters would be established well and credibly. Lowry cites the only point of criticism that the series focuses on the action, but the actual plot around sleeper agents and secret operations is too slow to work out and the individual storylines, which would be held together by Michelle Forbes and Omar Metwally , too slowly combine.

Benjamin Lee of the Guardian makes a similar assessment . While Treadstone is part of an annoying trend in which series are released for well-known film series, the path to television has become inevitable for the material after the last two films The Bourne Legacy and Jason Bourne were the weakest representatives of the film series. To Lee's surprise, however, the ambitious story contains many interesting aspects, such as unexpected twists and turns that would make the series well worth seeing. Although there are sometimes awkward transitions and less than gripping episode finals, in general the change between protagonists and places works, which creates a detailed world. It's fun to watch so many Bourne-like characters as they are staged in solid action sequences that, however, couldn't compete with those of the movies. The result is fast and violent fights, which are less of a stylistic focus, but rather a quality craftsmanship. In conclusion, Lee draws that the series seems superfluous at first, but is a surprisingly refreshing addition to the saga.

Daniel D'Addario from Variety , however, is ambivalent about the series. It seems like an inferior fraction of the context or narrative richness of good books and films, which can, however, score with really funny fight scenes. Treadstone is jumping between similar storylines, which makes the series feel indecisive rather than balanced. Nevertheless there is still enough energy, especially the performance of Han Hyo-joo should be highlighted positively. The scenario around the character of Patrick Fugit , on the other hand, is by far the best, as it takes time for “What-am-I” and “What-have-I-done” questions, which in the films are only marginal were discussed. All other storylines would rather go easy ways instead of delving deep into the story and characters.

Tim Goodman from the Hollywood Reporter is completely disappointed . So the numerous producers of the series with the half-hearted idea of making a subplot of the film series the main story of the series and thereby benefiting from the popularity of the films, reached completely into the void. The biggest problem are the scripts, which rely on over-the-top action instead of the brain. The whole story is confused, there are nonsensical plot elements, decisions by characters are incomprehensible and all in all, this creates a wrong drama with wrong action. With this context, according to Goodman, the overqualified actors, especially Tracy Ifeachor and Brian J. Smith , could only be sorry.

In his preview in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Fritz Göttler describes Treadstone as a “classic, dramaturgically wide-ranging political intrigue” that conjures up “the feverish cinema” in the action scenes. Gunther Reinhardt explains in the Stuttgarter Zeitung that even if Jeremy Irvine is not Matt Damon , many elements of the movies can be found in Treadstone . These include the issue of escape, "meaningful" music, fast-cut fight scenes, sudden outbreaks of violence, a wobbly and subjective camera, a breathless dramaturgy, close-ups, the dreary and concrete-heavy scene as well as a love-hate romance between the fronts. In addition, new characters would keep popping up who spoke different languages in wild confusion.
