The Amazon Studios are a US-based film production company and belong to Amazon.com . Amazon Studios develop the television programs and films they produce on the basis of the crowdsourcing activities that are coordinated on their online platform and taking into account the feedback from online viewers who use the Prime Video program (until September 2015 Amazon Instant Video , until February 2018 Amazon Video ), the digital video streaming service through which Amazon sells content that competes with services such as Netflix and Hulu . After the administration of Amazon Studios was previously housed in the Sherman Oaks Galleria in Los Angeles , the premises were relocated to Santa Monica , California in 2013 , where Amazon has a usable area of up to 7,000 square meters in the Water Garden on Colorado Avenue and 26th Street Available.

history

Amazon Studios was launched in 2010 to simplify the process of finding new scripts for films and series. At that time, Amazon Studios started an online platform for developing new programs by outsourcing the creative processes . The studios launched a call to budding screenwriters, directors, animated filmmakers, film editors and others interested in the film industry to work together on new formats. The authors could submit treatments or finished scripts, automatically giving Amazon the rights to produce the idea free of charge. The articles published here were allowed to be revised or completely rewritten by other interested parties, and the Amazon Studios produced various television series based on them. Amazon Studios have received over 20,000 scripts for films and 5,000 scripts for pilot episodes of series via the platform (as of December 2015). One series that came about through the platform is Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street .

Since 2013, Amazon Studios have been producing several pilot episodes each year, which are made available on Prime Video . These pilot episodes can be rated by users, and the programs with the most positive ratings are produced as a series. In addition, users can submit scripts for possible future drama, comedy and children's series online. The first pilot episode was shown in April 2013. It produces series from the genres of drama, comedy, series for children and young people and for preschoolers, but since 2015 also films . The Amazon Studios use a development slate to describe a list of promising projects that are to be produced as films or series in the foreseeable future. The list is maintained by an Amazon Studios development team.

Since 2015, in accordance with their new options policy, Amazon Studios have been sending authors whose work they are interested in an offer of a fee equivalent to the usual remuneration of screenwriters, which the submitter can accept or decline.

After Amazon Studios had already offered the Storybuilder for free at the end of 2013 , software that corresponds to a virtual version of note cards that screenwriters use to develop a story, the Amazon Storywriter followed in November 2015, a cloud-based software that supports the work of Scriptwriting should make it easier. At the same time, Amazon Studios also opened their platform to members of the Writers Guild of America and the Animation Guild.

management

Roy Price, who previously worked as Vice President of Creative Affairs for Walt Disney TV Animation and from 2004 for Amazon Instant , became its Vice President when Amazon Studios was founded in 2010. In this role, Price was responsible for overseeing and developing the studios' film and television productions. Price was also the director of digital product development for Amazon. After producer Isa Hackett ( The Plan ) accused director Roy Price of sexual harassment in October 2017 and revealed this in detail in an interview, Price was suspended and announced his resignation from the position on October 17, 2017. COO Albert Cheng has been appointed interim manager. In February 2018, Jennifer Salke was appointed as the new CEO.

In January 2015, Ted Hope was appointed to be responsible for the production of Amazon Original Movies . On June 1, 2015, it was announced that Bob Berney had been appointed Head of Sales and Marketing and Albert Cheng had been appointed Chief Operating Officer. Berney had previously worked in the international film world for over 20 years and was involved in film projects from 2000 that grossed over 1 billion US dollars in cinemas. Most recently, Berney was Chief Executive Officer of Picturehouse , a film distributor founded in 2005 by New Line Cinema and HBO as a joint venture . Cheng previously served as Executive Vice President and Head of Digital Formats Production for the Disney-ABC Television Group of the Walt Disney Company , where he made Disney / ABC programming available on digital platforms. Cheng's idea of streaming several full-length ABC series on one website for free for two months was recognized by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) with the 2006 Interactive Television Emmy Award for interactive program television on new distribution platforms. As part of this project, Cheng analyzed audience feedback to gain insights into other streaming projects that would later be shown on prime-time online, which was a first for ABC.

In November 2015, Donna Rosenstein became the casting director of Amazon Studios. Rosenstein was previously casting director for series such as Castle , Grimm and Ghost Whisperer - Voices from the Beyond . Nick Hall , who previously worked for the US television program provider HBO , has been the head of development for comedy series at Amazon Studios since June 2016 . Joe Lewis, who joined Amazon Studios in 2012, is responsible for developing drama TV series in the classic half-hour format and has also been responsible for developing one-hour series since autumn 2016. Tara Sorensen, the head of the Kids Programming department , is responsible for the development of new children's series at Amazon Studios. Morgan Wandell, who previously developed television series for ABC Studios and joined Amazon Studios at the end of 2013, has been Head of International Productions since autumn 2016 . In this role, he is responsible for developing television series outside of the United States.

In August 2015, Amazon Studios announced that they were developing a series based on the movie Galaxy Quest .

Film productions

Personnel

In January 2015, Ted Hope , who founded the New York film production company Good Machine with James Schamus in 1991 and later sold it to Universal, was appointed to be responsible for the production of Amazon Original Movies .

Bob Berney , who was previously CEO of the film marketing and sales company Picturehouse , tries as Head of Movie Marketing & Distribution to bring the original movies and the films bought by Amazon Studios into theaters. In August 2015, Julie Rapaport also left her previous employer, The Weinstein Company, and from then on worked on the development of Amazon Studios' films. At the same time, Scott Foundas , the chief film critic of Variety magazine , moved to the company, where he has since worked on film development and acquisition.

Amazon Original Movies

On January 19, 2015, Roy Price, Vice President of Amazon Studios, announced the expansion of production to include feature films, which will not only be distributed via the company's own platforms, but also shown in cinemas. In December 2015, Chi-Raq, the first original movie produced by Amazon Studios, was released. This was followed by the film Creative Control , which was released in March 2016, and Elvis & Nixon , with Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey in the leading roles, as another original movie , which was released in April 2016. Paterson premiered in May 2016 .

Amazon announced that it would give the cinemas that show the Amazon Original Movies one to two months before their online screening starts. This agreement is intended to make it more attractive for cinemas to show Amazon Original Movies and generate higher profits for both parties. It took nine months to a year before a movie was shown on a streaming service. Those familiar with the film industry see possible consequences for the entire film industry in Amazon's new business model. According to Roy Price, Amazon Studios are planning to bring up to 12 Amazon Original Movies per year to cinemas with their Creative Director Ted Hope , which would put them almost on par with other Hollywood studios in terms of the number of productions do not have a corporate streaming service. The Notable Movie Projects , i.e. notable film projects, currently include 59 projects that are being worked on (as of January 2016).

Since autumn 2016, the production, distribution and licensing of original films by Amazon Studios have been combined in the Prime Movies division , and Jason Ropell has been entrusted with the management of this division.
