Hulu is an Internet platform with a paid video-on-demand service that requires registration. TV series, feature films and trailers from the American media groups NBC , FOX , ABC and other providers are streamed in Flash video format . Hulu.com is a joint venture between NBC Universal and Disney-ABC Television Group and is currently only available to users with a US IP address .

In addition to the browser-dependent platform, there is the Flash-based software Hulu Desktop.

In 2009, Chase Carey, vice chairman of the News Corporation, announced that Hulu would soon have to introduce a paid model. On November 17, 2010, Hulu Plus , an additional payment service, was introduced, which provides its users with a larger amount of content from the already existing television series. Hulu Plus is available on different platforms: Apple TV , Blu-ray players, Smart TVs , smartphones and tablets, consoles (Microsoft: Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Nintendo: 3DS, Wii, Nintendo Switch, Sony: PlayStation 3 and 4), Roku Streaming Player and WD TV Media Player.

In the summer of 2011 it was announced that the current owners wanted to sell the platform and are therefore in talks with Yahoo , Microsoft and Google . The sales process was stopped in autumn 2011, among other things because Hulu could not offer long-term usage rights for the video content and the offered price was too low for the owners. At the end of 2016, Hulu's free offer was discontinued. Until March 2019, the media companies NBC Universal, Fox Entertainment Group, WarnerMedia and Disney were involved in Hulu. With the takeover of Fox by Disney and the exit of WarnerMedia, Disney was able to increase its shares to 68% and thus has the majority. Disney plans the complete takeover of Hulu by 2024. Furthermore, it is currently planned to place Hulu on the international market in 2021, as soon as Disney + has established itself.
