Flash Video ( FLV ) is an open container format developed by Adobe Inc. that is primarily used for Internet transmission of video content . Depending on the codec used, it is compatible with Adobe Flash Players from version 6 or 7 (see below).

It is also possible to load such Flash-Video files embedded in a SWF file.

format

Adobe Flash Player currently supports the video codecs Sorenson (an MPEG-4 ASP H.263 codec variant), VP6 (from On2 ) and MPEG-4 based on the H.264 -Default. A special screen capture codec is also available.

MP3 , Nellymoser Asao , Speex and the HE-AAC codec are possible as audio codecs . All four audio codecs are lossy.

Format support

The Adobe Flash Player can play FLV videos from version 6. These are loaded from an RTMP streaming server. From version 7, loading via HTTP is possible. This allows the FLV video file to be distributed by a web server .

Up to and including Adobe Flash Player Version 7, only the Sorenson Codec ( FourCC :) FLV1and the Screen Capture Codec can be used in the FLV video for the picture, and MP3 for an audio track. FLV videos with VP6 codec (FourCC: VP6For FLV4) can be played from version 8. As of minor version 9.0.115, Adobe Flash Player can also play other video file formats than FLV. The H.264 codec and HE-AAC audio are supported, which may also be in other video file containers ( MP4 , mov, 3gp etc.).

Playback via plug-in in the web browser

An installed playback program for Adobe Flash files as an additional module (plug-in) in the web browser is currently much more widespread than plug-ins from competing formats such as Quicktime or Real . Flash-Video is therefore characterized by the fact that videos can be displayed on websites in this format with a correspondingly larger number of computers. It is on this basis that major video portals such as YouTube , MyVideo , sevenload and clipfish rely on Flash videos.

As playback software , in addition to the proprietary Adobe Flash Player , there are efforts to create free software as an alternative with Gnash from the GNU project as well as Swfdec and Lightspark .

Play in the video player

In order to be able to play Flash videos outside the web browser, a video player (or codec such as ffdshow ) that supports the Flash video format must be installed regardless of the Flash player .

Files in Flash video format can be played back with RealPlayer , MPlayer , VLC media player , Winamp , FLV media player and Adobe Media Player . On the Macintosh, QuickTime can play Flash video files using the Perian codec pack. There is also a quick look plug-in.
