Sevenload [ ˈsevənloʊd ] was a video portal that was discontinued on April 4, 2014. Videos and images could be uploaded, indexed, protected, commented on, organized in albums and shared and exchanged with others on Sevenload. In addition to user-generated content, Sevenload offered users TV content and a large number of music videos in collaboration with numerous production companies and record labels. In the TV sector, Sevenload cooperated z. B. with National Geographic, Deutsche Welle and DMAX. Universal Music and Sony Music showed current and older music clips in their channels. Most recently there were 22 localized state portals in a total of 12 languages.
Companies
Sevenload GmbH was founded in April 2006 in Cologne by Ibrahim Evsan , Thomas Bachem and the investment company of Axel Schmiegelow ( dw capital GmbH ). Ibrahim Evsan and Thomas Bachem had been developing the technology for a video player on the Internet since autumn 2005. Axel Schmiegelow was appointed managing director in summer 2006 . Ibrahim Evsan and Thomas Bachem also signed as managing directors. In 2007, Andreas Heyden joined as a further managing director, who had founded the Sevenload competitor Clipfish as in-house founder at RTL. He took over the responsibility for the licensing of professional TV content.
The two co-founders Ibrahim Evsan and Thomas Bachem left the company in September 2009 to start a new company. Since then, the company's managing directors have been Axel Schmiegelow and Andreas Heyden. T-Online Venture Fund , DLD Ventures , Martin Varsavsky , Media Ventures GmbH , dw capital GmbH as well as through management holding companies Axel Schmiegelow, Andreas Heyden, Jodok Batlogg , Richard Cooperstein and an employee participation company were involved in Sevenload .
On December 15, 2010, a report in the Handelsblatt announced that the Burda Group had acquired the majority of the company through its holding company DLD Ventures by purchasing the shares in the T-Online Venture Fund on December 17, 2010. In the course of this, the co-founder and previous managing director Axel Schmiegelow switched to the company's supervisory board, while Andreas Heyden took over the sole management. The new supervisory board was therefore formed by Marcel Reichart, Jörg Lübcke and Axel Schmiegelow. According to media reports, it was reasonable to assume that, due to the composition of the supervisory board, Media Ventures GmbH ( Dirk Ströer ) and private investors such as Martin Varsavsky had given up their shares, and only DLD Ventures and dw capital continued to hold shares in the company as investors. The further ownership structure in Sevenload by further investors or minority holdings has since been unclear.
Sevenload was discontinued on April 4, 2014.
User functions
Unregistered users could view the content published on Sevenload. Registered users also had the opportunity to upload their own content and actively help shape the community. The users had the opportunity to manage the rights of use for their self-created works via the Creative Commons license. About RSS - Web feeds , users were able to be informed of updates to the photos or special keywords individually. With numerous widgets or the embedded flash player, photos and videos hosted on Sevenload could be integrated into members' private websites, forums or blogs.
Content
In addition to the principle of user-generated content , Sevenload offered its users channels structured according to various categories. In this area, the company saw itself as a provider of so-called "premium TV content" that was provided by various content partners. Over 1,800 WebTV formats with their own moderators and actors were regularly presented in these channels in the form of in-house productions, shows, reports and documentaries (including the Mindtime Show ). The content was compiled by a dedicated editorial team in the channels itself, so that a mixture of professional topics such as the videos from Focus Online, but also of semi-professional to amateur content, which can rather be assigned to user-generated content, was created.
The eighth and ninth seasons of Big Brother were integrated into the website as a separate format. The first season (1995) of Verbotene Liebe was available since August 2008 . In September 2009, Sevenload launched its own music portal, sevenload Music TV . Since August 2009, Sevenload has had a German and French-speaking channel for World Wrestling Entertainment . The Turkish-language website followed in February 2010 and the Polish-language website for World Wrestling Entertainment in October 2010 .
technology
At Sevenload, the videos were saved in Flash video format and could be played online as a stream in a web browser. The Adobe Flash plug-in had to be installed to view the videos in the web browser. Videos could be uploaded up to a size of 1.5 GB in the most common formats (e.g. AVI , MPEG , WMV or QuickTime ). Before being redistributed, Sevenload converted them to Flash video format. The users could upload pictures up to a size of ten MB; The formats JPG , GIF , PNG , BMP , TIF , JP2 , PSD , WMF and EPS were allowed .
In addition to the classic advertising banners , Sevenload also offered video advertising, which was accompanied by a share of the revenue for the users. Each video started with a max. 30 seconds of advertising before you saw the actual content.
At the end of March 2008 the portal was completely redesigned and was named “sevenload 3.0”. In addition to the design , the video player was also redesigned and offered better picture quality. In the new version, users could create groups that were already known from other social networks such as Facebook or StudiVZ .
Since February 2009 it has been possible to upload videos in high definition quality, but the size limit has been increased from 200 megabytes to 1.5 gigabytes.
Later, some of the Sevenload videos with around 100 channels were also available on new TV sets from Philips Net TV , Sony BRAVIA , TechniSat and Loewe as well as on set-top boxes and digital receivers with T-Home Entertain and Videoweb .
criticism
- Copyright Infringement
Despite the ban, copyrighted material was repeatedly distributed on Sevenload. According to a test report from 2007 by Computer Bild magazine , it was deleted quickly after receiving a report. In a judgment of 29 September 2010 the Higher Regional Court of Hamburg , the video platform Sevenload was relieved of a music publisher of the allegations in the context of an appeal action to make copyrighted material their own and therefore not had to answer as perpetrators of copyright infringement. This ruling seems to point the way for the German media industry, especially since the district court of Hamburg only rejected GEMA's urgent application for an injunction against the competing portal YouTube in August .
- Content
The portal offered fewer videos compared to the competition. In addition to approx. 1,800 channels, the content known for video platforms was found in short clips, recordings, recordings and funny videos.
