history

One of Hellermann's first products: three-prong pliers and cable sleeves

Paul Hellermann founded the GmbH of the same name in 1935 and initially traded in rubber grommets. The first place of business was ' Große Bleichen ' near the Hamburg Inner Alster . The Ohnsorg Theater , which in 2011, after 75 years at this location, moved to the Bieberhaus on Heidi-Kabel Platz was later located in the same premises . A few years later, the Hellermann three-mandrel pliers for expanding and applying nozzles became a trademark.

In 1960 the company moved from Hamburg to Pinneberg (Schleswig-Holstein) on Siemensstrasse. Five years after moving to the district town of Pinneberg, a new system for bundling cables and lines was presented, which works with endless material, the Tyton system . The product name "Tyton" was integrated into the company name from 1999 when the Hellermann Group was merged under the brand name HellermannTyton.

In 1981 the subsidiary Hellermann Engineering, today HellermannTyton Engineering GmbH, was founded to manufacture its own injection molding tools .

In 2000 the German GmbH, with its then 270 employees, moved to Tornesch (Pinneberg district, Schleswig-Holstein). A new administration and production building including an automatic high rack system was built there “on the green field”. The new building was expanded in 2006, with the storage capacity more than doubling.

In July 2015 it was announced that HellermannTyton would be taken over by the British company Delphi Automotive . The takeover was completed on December 18, 2015 and HellermannTyton is no longer listed on the London Stock Exchange . HellermannTyton became part of the electrical / electronic architecture division of Delphi. After the takeover, HellermannTyton's headquarters were relocated from Crawley to Tornesch .

In March 2015, the official groundbreaking for the fourth construction phase took place, the expansion of the logistics area by a further 6,600 m² and an additional 5,400 m² of office space on two upper floors, in Germany.

Significance for the region

The first logo of Paul Hellermann GmbH. It was replaced in 1999 by the current logo, the HellermannTyton logo in blue and red.

HellermannTyton is one of the most important employers and taxpayers in the city of Tornesch . The company employs over 700 people in the new industrial area.

The company provides training in commercial and industrial professions. It employs around 30 trainees in the following professions:

Markets and Products

The products are used in many industrial sectors such as aviation , rail vehicle construction and mechanical engineering , and some are sold through electrical wholesalers.

In addition, the company has been developing fastening elements such as cable ducts and retaining clips for the automotive sector since around 1980. Fasteners and cable ties are used in doors, in the engine compartment and on the entire cable harness . In the engine compartment z. B. cables, hoses and lines held and secured. In addition to the standard plastic parts such as cable ties, shrink tubing, etc., customer-specific products for various areas of application are developed on the basis of specific requirements.

production method

The following manufacturing processes are used in the German production facility: injection molding , extrusion, development and assembly of processing tools and laser welding . The focus of production is on the injection molding process for the manufacture of plastic products. Granulated plastic , the so-called granulate, for example polyamide , is liquefied by heating and injected into a mold.

Raw materials used

Polyamide 6.6 (PA66) is primarily processed for plastic products. Other materials are polypropylene (PP), polyamide 12 (less hygroscopic than PA66) and polyamide 4.6 (more heat-resistant than PA66). In addition, so-called “designer polymers ” such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK for short), polyamide 4.6 (PA46) and E / TFE (Tefzel®) are used. These are heat-resistant materials that are suitable for applications in which temperatures of +150 ° C (PA 46), +170 ° C (E / TFE (Tefzel®)), +240 ° C (PEEK) (continuous operating temperature) can be achieved. The material consumption is over 10,000 tons per year (as of 2012). The company has been making cable ties from PA11, a castor oil plastic, since 2012. A plastic based on renewable raw materials. Applications for these cable ties are mainly solar systems and offshore wind parks. Furthermore, heavy-duty cable ties are made from stainless steel, for example, which have to withstand higher loads. These cable ties are used, for example, in offshore wind farms , in the chemical industry and in mining.

Certifications

HellermannTyton has been listed in the EC database of regulated agents and known senders (RAKCD) since February 2013. The well-known consignor has a special status: He is considered to be “reliable and trustworthy” and can already “safely” handle and hand over air freight shipments within the transport chain, thereby making use of simplified freight handling at the airport. Similarly, the company has been certified as Authorized Economic Operator (AEO - "Authorized Economic Operators"). An authorized economic operator can, among other things, make use of special simplifications within the scope of customs clearance within the entire European Union without having to carry out extensive checks again.
