Clipfish was a German video portal that was started in June 2006 by the RTL subsidiary RTL interactive . Initially, the site mainly contained user-generated content , but later TV series, movies, animes and recordings from RTL programs such as Deutschland sucht den Superstar and Das Supertalent were added. Clipfish was dissolved in 2017. The URL now refers to the online media library TVNOW of the RTL Group , into which the successor Watchbox was also taken over at the end of March 2019.

Company development and history

Clip contest

With the start of Clipfish in 2006, the RTL clip contest was brought into being in connection with the DSDS program. Before and during the casting phase, users were given the opportunity to present videos of themselves with their singing in the competition. The Clipfish community chose the winner after a submission phase. The winner received an adventure weekend with RTL as well as vocal coaching; however, they had little success at DSDS. This type of competition has not been held since 2008.

Clipfish TV

In autumn 2007, the best clips from the Clipfish range were shown on the Clipfish TV program on RTL. The show was moderated by the comedian Matze Knop .

100,000 euro man

Clipfish served as the official portal for the RTL campaign 100,000 Euro Man - One Alone Against Germany (2008). Both the registration as a “hunter”, whose task it was to catch the “100,000 euro man”, and applications in the form of videos for the “100,000 euro man” were organized via Clipfish. In addition, the latest information on the whereabouts of the “100,000 euro man” was published on Clipfish in the form of geographic coordinates and videos.

New logo and new direction

As part of the repositioning of the platform, the user-generated content was switched off at the end of 2013 in order to focus exclusively on professionally produced moving image content. At the same time, the logo and the design of the platform were completely renewed. The comedy series Comedy Rocket started in 2015 and was initially published exclusively on Clipfish.

Watchbox

As of July 25, 2017, the URL www.clipfish.de referred to the successor portal Watchbox. The design has also been completely revised. It is based strongly on that of video-on-demand portals such as Netflix or Maxdome .
