Maxdome (own spelling: maxdome ) is a video-on-demand portal from Joyn GmbH . With over 50,000 films, series episodes, documentaries and children's programs, maxdome claims to be Germany's largest online video library. In addition to US films and series in SD and HD quality, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 and original sound, TV productions and in-house productions by the ProSiebenSat.1 Group are also available at a fixed monthly price. In the summer of 2016, the online video library announced its first in-house production “ jerks. “With Christian Ulmen as director and protagonist. The platform has now been replaced by Joyn in Germany . This means that maxdome is only available to previous subscribers in Germany. In Austria, however, maxdome was still available for new customers. In mid-April 2020 it was announced that the platform would be discontinued in summer 2020. Emergence

Maxdome was originally designed by the Kirch Group (Kirch New Media) as a streaming portal for the transmission of live football matches, but later by SevenOne Intermedia, a subsidiary of the ProSiebenSat.1 Group in cooperation with a development team from GMX , a subsidiary of United Internet AG , converted into a video-on-demand portal. The first preliminary version of the platform was presented to the public at CeBIT in March 2006. The official start was on July 27, 2006 during a press conference on The Big Picture in Düsseldorf. With effect from January 1, 2011, the ProSiebenSat.1 Group acquired all shares in maxdome and the company location was relocated from Karlsruhe to Munich. In August 2013 maxdome GmbH became a direct subsidiary of the ProSiebenSat.1 Group. Since then, maxdome GmbH has been responsible for sales of the maxdome online video library and the MyVideo video platform . For the company's ten-year anniversary in 2016, maxdome revised its offer and introduced an editorial team that has been making targeted recommendations for films and series ever since.

Business model

The ad-free offer from maxdome is available around the clock for individual access. The business model is divided into two forms of billing: the maxdome monthly package, a subscription in which a monthly flat rate is billed, and individual access via the maxdome store, in which billing is based on actual use.

The maxdome monthly package

All films and series contained in the package can be played as often as you like. After the free trial month, which has a 14-day notice period, the monthly costs amount to € 7.99. Maxdome also describes itself as the first online video library that relies on comprehensive curation of content and the networking of automated mechanisms with editorial recommendations. The expansion of automated recommendations to include an editorial component is considered a novelty in the VoD market and is being continuously developed by maxdome as a holistic curation strategy.

The maxdome store

In the maxdome store, the user can watch films and series without a contract. Blockbusters are available shortly after the theatrical release and series highlights 24 hours after the US broadcast. The video accesses take place individually in the rental or purchase process. The maxdome store offers more than 1,000 titles.

technology

The offers of the video-on-demand portal are made available to the customer via online streaming . The maxdome app can also be used to download content and view it on mobile devices for 48 hours without internet access.

The video streams are with H.264 encoding and use among browsers with HTML5 the MPEG-DASH , among browsers with Silverlight , the Smooth Streaming technology. Standard options such as play / pause, volume control, rewind via progress display, full screen and next-episode function are included. The picture and sound quality with Dolby Digital Plus -5.1.- and the HD standard.

Availability

The offer from maxdome.de can also be used on the web. Since mid-March 2015, maxdome has been offering an HTML5 player that enables the service to be used without Silverlight with the Google Chrome browser from version 38, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 (under Windows 8.1 / 10) and is therefore also available under Linux (the open source version Chromium lacks some DRM components, so this is not sufficient). Since the middle of 2016, the HTML5 player has also been available on Firefox from version 47, as well as Opera and Vivaldi .

There is an app for devices with iOS , Android and Windows 10 . It should be noted that the app only allows access to the monthly package of the online video library, but not to the maxdome Store single access service.

In addition, maxdome can be accessed on almost all smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Toshiba, Loewe, Sony and many more) as well as via set-top boxes, internet-enabled Blu-ray players (HUMAX, TechniSat, Samsung, LG etc.) ), PlayStation 3 and 4 , Xbox One or via Google Chromecast . The general technical requirement for streaming with the devices mentioned above is an internet connection with a data transfer rate of at least 2 Mbit / s. With adaptive streaming, smaller bandwidths are also sufficient. At least 6 Mbit / s is recommended for HD streaming.

Maxdome is an integral part of various mobile phone providers as well as Deutsche Bahn through direct integration into their TV and media platforms:

• Deutsche Bahn : Maxdome onboard has been available on board WiFi in Deutsche Bahn ICE trains since spring 2017 . A changing range of 50 films and series from the provider's catalog is available to travelers free of charge. The content is kept ready on a local server on the train so that it is available regardless of the Internet connection.
• mobilcom-debitel : Contract customers can also book maxdome here, with payment being made via the mobile phone bill.
• Pyur : At Pÿur, maxdome can either be booked as an add-on option to the HDTV or Surf & Phone + HDTV packages. The maxdome package purchased from Pÿur can only be used via the advanceTV box or the advanceTV app. The advanceTV app is available free of charge for iOS and Google Android.
• Unitymedia : The cable provider Unitymedia has been integrating the maxdome online video library into its Horizon and Horizon Go platforms since 2015.
• Vodafone : maxdome can be booked in different tariffs of the cable provider and is an integral part of the GigaTV tariff line.

Content

maxdome maintains more than 100 content partnerships with major US studios such as CBS, Fox, Paramount, Universal, Warner and Disney. The overall offer includes content from various genres such as Hollywood blockbusters, feature films, international series hits, documentaries, children's programs, exclusive local content and in-house productions by the ProSiebenSat.1 Group . There are also special interest programs.

In-house productions

The first in-house production of the video-on-demand provider has been available to maxdome customers since January 2017. This is the ten-part comedy series “ jerks. ", Which was filmed in Potsdam in September 2016 . Christian Ulmen stood next to Fahri Yardim as an actor in front of the camera and also made his directorial debut.
