Vivaldi is a free web browser from the Norwegian company Vivaldi Technologies , which Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner , co-founder and long-time director of Opera Software , founded after leaving the company to develop a new browser in 2013.
Vivaldi was supposed to further develop the sophisticated range of functions that Opera “radically reduced” when switching from the HTML renderer Presto (Opera 12.15) to Blink (Opera 15). Up to then, Opera, as one of the world's most important browsers, had a disproportionately high popularity among technology-savvy users and administrators. At the same time, it developed into the leading browser in large parts of Africa and some other developing countries . Vivaldi was targeting the niche in the market that Opera left behind when editing versions , but for capacity reasons also relied on the open-source WebKit spin-off Blink of the Google- initiated Chromium open source project , which was operated by Opera, Yandex , Samsung , and others for the browser engine . Intel , Nvidia and Microsoft is supported.
The first preliminary version was published in early 2015. After three further previous versions in the course of the year and three releases designated as beta in the following winter, von Tetzchner himself presented the 1.0 release in April 2016 . Version 1.1 was released just three weeks later. Version 1.15 followed in April 2018 and a major expansion with version 2.0 in September 2018.
The first previous version was already accessed over half a million times in a very short time. In May 2016, “currently around one million active users per month” were mentioned in the interview, as well as “a few million users to get out of the red” as the next target.
history
Vivaldi began as an online community that replaced the My Opera site with Opera Software in March 2014 after it was closed. Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner was annoyed by the decision and convinced that this community had made the browser what it was in the first place. Tetzchner then started the Vivaldi community, which is aimed at registered users and was supposed to compensate for the closure of “My Opera” through an internet forum , a blog and numerous other web services . A survey by the developer team set up on February 25, 2015 to prioritize additional functions was accessed on March 16 by over 10,000 readers, and two months later by over 20,000. At the beginning of September 2015, the Vivaldi community had over 60,000 registered users. In the period that followed, the number grew more slowly but steadily to over 100,000 in July 2017.
Vivaldi Technologies presented the first preliminary version of the new browser to the press on January 27, 2015 with the help of the community and made it publicly available on February 16. Three more “Technical Previews” followed by July 16, which Vivaldi Technologies itself did not describe as a beta version , although they were very stable.
On 25 October, the weekly "was snapshot " billed as "Beta Candidate", on November 3, the first eventually followed officially beta designated release . A second beta version followed shortly before Christmas . In his blog entry , von Tetzchner saw Release 1.0 already approaching (“we are getting closer to a Vivaldi 1.0”), before finally, after a third and final beta version at the beginning of March 2016, on 6 April 2016 in the blog again, Release 1.0 himself officially presented. It was followed in 2016 by versions 1.1 to 1.6 and the following year by versions from 1.7 onwards. After almost two and a half years, Vivaldi reached version 2.0 in September 2018.
Like all popular browsers, Vivaldi can be used free of charge as freeware ; it is supposed to be financed by the companies whose websites appear in the browser's basic bookmarks. In line with the goals of the open source movement, the source code is publicly available.
reception
The trade press followed the new project of Tetzchner's long-time opera boss attentively from the start and considered the presentation of the first, already executable, "Technical Preview 1" version of the new web browser on January 27, 2015 in many IT and software media -Business with articles. The leading media, however, initially only registered Vivaldi marginally.
After the extensive previous version "Technical Preview 4" was published in July 2015, on August 2, 2015, Focus presented Vivaldi as an "exciting newcomer" in a "major browser test" taken over by Chip Online alongside the market leaders Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome and Internet Explorer .
Published on November 3, 2015 the first beta version discovered five days later, the observance of the picture in a test report which features and capabilities, but also pointed out limitations of the browser and statements Jon Stephenson of Tetzchners reproduced against the editors.
The manufacturer already stated 400,000 requests in a week for the first previous version, shortly afterwards over half a million in ten days. In May 2016, von Tetzchner named in an interview "currently around one million active users per month"; his next goal was "a few million users to get out of the red."
In a test from spring 2019, Computer Bild came to the conclusion that the browser made a very positive impression. In order to be able to exploit the full potential, the user has to deal intensively with the browser, according to the result of the test.
Other tests, for example by Chip , touted the functions and possibilities of customization, but still warn against too much euphoria.
Functions
Customizable design
Vivaldi has a very reduced design with navigation icons and a color theme that changes to match the colors of the favicon of the website being visited . The browser allows users to customize the display of elements of the user interface as well as the background color, design, address bar and the position of the tabs. According to the founder of the company von Tetzchner, Vivaldi's great adaptability has played a major role in its success.
The second previous version (“Technical Preview 2”) also made it possible to use extensions from Google Chrome's “Web Store”. This makes it possible, for example, to add functions such as ad blocker , RSS and language translation service to Vivaldi , which are missing in the basic configuration as in other browsers.
Operating functionalities
Vivaldi enables extensive organization of the websites visited. It is possible to “stack” tabs in groups and arrange them as “tiles” and to handle them together via the context menu , for example to move, delete or save bookmarks for all pages in the group. In addition, it is not only possible to save bookmarks for web addresses, but also to make notes and provide them with screenshots of web pages. In addition, these can be sorted into individual multi-level folder hierarchies. URLs can also be saved as “quick selections” in quick access folders and “Quick Commands” can be used to search through bookmarks, history, open tabs and settings. Vivaldi is based on web technologies such as HTML5 , Node.js , React.js and numerous NPM modules. Since “Technical Preview 4” Vivaldi has also supported mouse gestures for switching between tabs and activating the keyboard .
Future features
Vivaldi Technologies plans to develop further functions for future versions such as the integration of the e-mail client "M3". The browser synchronization "Vivaldi Sync", which allows users to synchronize bookmarks, browser history, passwords and settings across different computers, was introduced experimentally with version 1.13 and officially with version 1.15. In an interview, COO Tatsuki Tomita announced that they were also working on their own extension platform for his browser. Vivaldi does not currently have any data compression options due to a lack of infrastructure.
Proxy
Vivaldi can use a proxy server set in Windows under Windows. A separate proxy setting is not provided. The browser behaves like Opera from version 15; both are based on Chromium.
Versions
Desktop
Vivaldi Technologies gave the first published and "Technical Preview" versions of the new browser the major version number "1" and minor version number "0", which is usually used to designate the first completed version of a program (see table below).
Since then, Vivaldi's homepage vivaldi.com has offered the current “main version” in the so-called “stable channel” for Windows for immediate download at the click of a mouse . Via the intermediate step of a download page you can also get to other "stable" versions, e.g. B. for other operating systems or 32- and 64-bit versions.
At the same time, from the beginning, on the community website vivaldi.net, updated so-called " snapshots " were published, but with a backup of a blocker, albeit one that can be switched off, to prevent the automatic execution of Flash content on a website.
In addition to the two Windows versions for 32 and 64-bit computers, the previous versions were also published for Mac OS and in four Linux versions ( Debian package and RPM package , each for 32 and 64-bit computers) . The first beta release was also made available for all platforms mentioned right from the start . The installation files for the previews initially comprised around 35 (Windows 32-bit) or 40 MiB (Windows 64-bit), now a good 40 or a good 47 MiB.
