jerks. is a German comedy - TV series , which since January 2017 from video-on-demand -Anbieter max cathedrals and the TV station ProSieben is published. It is about the friendship between the main actors Christian Ulmen and Fahri Yardım .

The comedy series is the first self-produced series by the online video library and video-on-demand provider maxdome in cooperation with the television station ProSieben and is an adaptation of the Danish television series Klovn .

In November 2019, the series was extended by a fourth season, which is due to be shot in spring 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will be released in summer 2021. A prequel in the form of a Christmas special is to be published in December 2020 .

action

The series is about Christian Ulmen and Fahri Yardım, who are very close friends. Both try to cope with their everyday problems with ease, but this does not always work. Christian is in a relationship with Emily, while Fahri lives happily with Pheline. They too are regularly confronted with Christian and Fahri's everyday problems. The two main roles appear to play themselves in the series, although the mixture of fiction and real context is confusing for viewers. For example, the ex-wife of Christian Ulmens in the series is played by the actor's real wife ( Collien Ulmen-Fernandes ). Also diving scene - shooting in the series, where Christian and Fahri as a working team of investigators, although there is no real crime scene are a team with the two - they but part of different real crime scene teams each. The series takes place in original locations in the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam and well-known people from Berlin and the actors' surroundings appear as supporting roles.

Each episode is a mixture of retold events and fictional elements. Christian and Fahri usually act rashly and try to save themselves with lies that are revealed in the end and lead to embarrassing situations.

production

Idol

The series is an adaptation of the Danish television series Klovn . Between 2005 and 2018, a total of seven seasons or 70 episodes were produced and broadcast on TV 2 Zulu . Before jerks. the series format has already been successfully sold to Belgium and the Netherlands. Klovn, on the other hand, was strongly influenced by the American Curb Your Enthusiasm : Here, too, a television celebrity plays himself and repeatedly gets into embarrassing situations due to his behavior. The series also do not have complete scripts, but the dialogues are improvised by the actors . Unlike other adaptations of foreign formats (for example Stromberg , which, according to the credits, was inspired by the British series The Office ), jerks. sometimes whole episodes are copied very faithfully; For example, the episode Camilla , in which the protagonists attend a masturbation course, is a direct adaptation of the episode It's a Jungle Down There , which was written by Lars von Trier in 2005 for the second season of Klovn . In an interview, Ulmen emphasized that the stories were inspired by my own experiences. On the other hand, Klovn's two main actors, Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen , had a short cameo at the parents' evening in the unadapted episode The JoJo Effect .

Pre-production and shooting

In April 2016, maxdome managing director Filmon Zerai said that the online video library and video-on-demand provider, like Netflix and Amazon Video , would like to produce and publish its own series in the next few months . Only three months later it became known that maxdome had commissioned a series about two best friends, played by Christian Ulmen and Fahri Yardım , from the production company Talpa Germany . The scripts for the first season were written by Johannes Boss and Murmel Clausen .

The first season was filmed in Potsdam from September to November 2016, directed by Christian Ulmen . The filming locations were in the Potsdam urban area, including the Dutch Quarter , Bassinplatz and the Einstein-Gymnasium in the city center, the noble villa districts in the Potsdam districts of Berliner Vorstadt (including the Garage du Pont restaurant on Glienicker Brücke ) and Neubabelsberg (including in Karl-Marx-Straße and Virchowstraße on Griebnitzsee ), as well as the western suburbs and old building districts in Babelsberg including the Babelsberg train station .

At the beginning of May 2017 maxdome confirmed the production of a second season, which was again filmed in Potsdam from September to October 2017 under the direction of Ulmen. Head writer of the second season was next to Johannes Boss Christian Ulmen. The scriptwriter Janna Nandzik and the two series inventors and leading actors from Klovn Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen contributed to the storyline .

At the end of May 2018, ProSieben and maxdome announced that there would be a third season. Shooting for these ten episodes started on September 12, 2018 in the Dutch Quarter in Potsdam. Filming under the re-direction of Ulmen ended on October 24, 2018. The scripts were again from Johannes Boss and Christian Ulmen and from Johann Buchholz . Hvam and Christensen were once again involved in the storyline.

At the beginning of November 2019, Joyn and ProSieben extended the series for a fourth season. It is being produced for the first time by the production company Pajama Pictures, newly founded by Christian Ulmen, Carsten Kelber and ProSiebenSat.1 .

criticism

This section consists only of a cunning collection of quotes from movie reviews. Instead, a summary of the reception of the film should be provided as continuous text, which can also include striking quotations, see also the explanations in the film format .

The reviews were mostly positive. Critical voices, on the other hand, drew comparisons to formats such as Louie , Curb your Enthusiasm and Pastewka and valued jerks. significantly weaker in comparison.

"And it's done incredibly well: [...] This series doesn't consider the viewer to be more stupid than themselves. It's made on an equal footing."

Jerks can do without a classic dialogue script - and that's why it's definitely worth seeing. [...] And if Max cathedrals and ProSieben do not order a second season, [...] I will also demand the abolition of Max cathedrals and ProSieben. "

"Framed by an unobtrusive, yet effective Berlin-local color," Jerks marches straight from the starting block to the top of the ranks of current German comedy series. "

- Sidney Schering : quotemeter.de

“Where Loriot exposed hairline cracks in the facades of civil society forty years ago,“ Jerks ”shakes the foundations of civilization with wild determination. [...] This therapy should definitely be extended. "

- Jörg Thomann : FAZ.net

“On the whole: Somewhat coarse men's heart humor, partly with the same actors, such as Jana Pallaske (as herself) and of course Christian Ulmen. The horizon of the series is shockingly small, barely reaching beyond the alleged breach of sexual taboos and the tongue-in-cheek parody of German showbiz. One has already seen worlds better with Louie and, because the comparison is so unfair, much more subtle and subtle also with Pastewka. "

- Hendrik Busch : moviepilot

"[...] where the embarrassing situations in 'Curb [your Enthusiasm]' are always plausible, 'real' so to speak, and are not just asserted by the documentary format, but are portrayed, fingers Ulmen, who plays himself and Larry David as Larry But David is away from Potsdam – Los Angeles, just around in the comedy drawer 'embarrassing situation' […] Ulmen and his friend and play partner Fahri Yardım […] leave the agonizing fixation on the utterly 'embarrassing' sex or faecal accident but drive, you suddenly end up with a rough German version of 'Louie', which, with all its stubborn thought-out, at least has little funny moments. "
