From the 2010/11 season to mid-September 2011 he played for Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg . Most recently he was under contract with Chicago Fire in the MLS . He also played for the German national team from 2002 to 2011 , with which he became vice European champion in 2008 and third place at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. His preferred position was center-back, but he was also used as a right-back.

Life

Friedrich grew up in Bad Oeynhausen, where he attended the Rehme-Oberbecksen elementary school , the Realschule Süd and, from 1995, the vocational school for business and administration. In the summer of 1997 he began training as an industrial clerk at the kitchen manufacturer SieMatic , which he completed in 1999 together with the technical college entrance qualification. For the 2000/01 season Arne Friedrich got his first professional contract as a footballer. The former coach of Arminia Bielefeld , Hermann Gerland , discovered him during his time in the regional league at SC Verl . Due to convincing performances, Gerland brought Friedrich to Arminia, where he became a regular player immediately.

Friedrich played for Bielefeld in the 2nd Bundesliga for two years. Then in February 2002 he accepted an offer from Berlin and moved to the capital club Hertha BSC . Shortly after signing the contract, he tore a tendon canal in his right foot in a match against Eintracht Frankfurt on February 18, 2002 . He was therefore unable to play a game in the second half of the season. Friedrich won the DFB League Cup with Hertha in 2002 .

After taking part in the 2004 European Championship in Portugal , he was diagnosed with patellar tendinitis on August 16, 2004 ; only on October 2, 2004 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern could he be used again.

In the 2004/05 season , Friedrich was appointed team captain by then coach Falko Götz . He held this position until the end of his time in Berlin. He extended his contract with Hertha BSC twice. He ran for the capital club in 231 games in the top German division.

After Hertha was relegated, Friedrich moved to VfL Wolfsburg . There he signed a three-year contract. However, his debut in the Lower Saxony jersey was delayed. A herniated disc that made an operation necessary cost him the entire first half of the season. It was not until December 22, 2010 that he was able to compete for the first time in a short stint in the DFB Cup against Energie Cottbus , which VfL lost 3-1. By then, the club was already in a relegation battle. In the second half of the season, in which he only missed two games due to a suspension, he strengthened VfL's central defense and secured the team with the team on the last day of the class.

Due to constant intervertebral disc problems, Friedrich missed the preparation and the start of the 2011/12 season. On September 19, 2011, the existing licensed player contract with VfL Wolfsburg was terminated at Friedrich's request.

In March 2012 he moved to Chicago Fire in the United States in Major League Soccer . There he received a one-year contract, which was extended for another year on October 7, 2012.

In June 2013 he ended his football career after persistent back problems.

At the European Championships in 2008 , Friedrich was again among the 23-man squad of the DFB . At the beginning of the tournament, however, he was only a substitute. Only in the last group game against Austria he was in the starting line-up; Germany won the game 1-0 and reached the quarter-finals. There Friedrich showed one of his best internationals in the game against Portugal . He took the entire game over Cristiano Ronaldo from the game, Germany won 3-2. The German team finished the tournament in second place.

In the meantime, Arne Friedrich (among the field players) was the national player with the most international appearances without scoring. With his 67th international match against South Africa on September 5, 2009 (final score: 2-0), he replaced Christian Wörns and Willi Schulz as record holders, who also failed to score in 66 international matches. Friedrich ultimately remained in 76 international matches without scoring.

On June 1, 2010 he was appointed to the final squad for the 2010 World Cup by national coach Löw . In the course of the tournament he played all games. In the 4-0 win in the quarter-finals against Argentina , he scored his only international goal with the goal to make it 3-0 in his 77th international match . During the entire World Cup, Friedrich and Per Mertesacker from Bremen formed the central defense of the German team, stood on the field for 630 minutes and did not miss a single minute of the game.

On January 27, 2011, Friedrich announced that he would end his national team career after the Euro 2012 .
He scored an own goal in the European Championship qualifier against Austria on June 3, 2011. It was his last international match as he was not nominated for the German EM squad . In an interview with Spiegel Online in June 2012, he admitted that with his decision to move to the USA, he had accepted that he would no longer play in the national team.

Friedrich completed 82 international matches (52 wins, 15 draws, 15 defeats), in which he scored one goal and gave four assists. In all of his missions he was never expelled from the field, but was warned twelve times with a yellow card.
