Hermann Gerland (born June 4, 1954 in Bochum ), also known as "Tiger", is a former German soccer player and later soccer coach . He spent most of his career as a player at VfL Bochum , for which he played over 200 Bundesliga games. He then became a coach, first in Bochum, then at several other clubs and made a name for himself in particular as the coach of the amateur team of FC Bayern Munich , where he looked after numerous national players and led them into professional football . Since the summer of 2017 he has been the sporting director of the FC Bayern Campus , the club's junior performance center. In addition, he has been the assistant coach of the club's first team since November 4, 2019.

Career

player

Gerland started playing football at the Bochum district club Westfalia Weitmar and, at the age of 18, received a professional contract with Bundesliga club VfL Bochum . He made his Bundesliga debut on September 16, 1972 (1st matchday) in a 2-0 win in the away game against Eintracht Braunschweig with a substitution for Werner Balte in the 72nd minute. His first of four goals he scored on May 19, 1973 in the 2: 3 defeat in the home game against Kickers Offenbach with the goal to 2: 2 in the 68th minute. After initially playing in the storm from 1972 to 1975 , he moved to the position of defender in 1975 . He was used in 25 games for the DFB Cup and scored two goals in the competition.

Trainer

He began his coaching career at VfL Bochum in the 1986/87 season, initially as an assistant coach . In 1988 he moved to Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg , which he was in charge of until 1990.

From the 1990/91 season he coached the amateurs and the A-youth of FC Bayern Munich at the same time . In 1991 he resigned from his position as A youth coach and remained an amateur coach until 1995. Gerland also worked as assistant coach for the professional team at FC Bayern Munich in the 1991/92 season . In the 1995/96 season he again coached 1. FC Nürnberg, which was playing in the 2. Bundesliga at that time . In 1996 he took over the post of head coach at Tennis Borussia Berlin , which remained unbeaten in the 1997/98 season, won the regional league championship with only seven goals and returned to paid football. Although successful in sport and popular in the area, Gerland was given a leave of absence in November 1998 due to differences with the club's management. In 1999 he turned to horse breeding in Marienfeld . From the 1999/2000 season Gerland coached the Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld , with whom he was relegated from the Bundesliga and was prematurely released the following season. The rest of the season he worked for the second division SSV Ulm 1846 . His record as a Bundesliga coach: 42 wins, 53 draws and 68 defeats.

Between 2001 and 2009 he coached the second team of FC Bayern Munich, which qualified for the third division in 2008 . On April 27, 2009 he became assistant coach of FC Bayern Munich under interim coach Jupp Heynckes , while Mehmet Scholl took over his position as head coach of the second team . Even under Louis van Gaal , Gerland remained assistant coach of the first team, and he also remained the sporting director of the second team in order to contribute to the better integration of young players in the Bundesliga team. For the 2010/11 season he again took over the second team of FC Bayern Munich, since Scholl left the club, but continued to work as assistant coach for the professionals. In the role of coach of the second team, he was replaced by Andries Jonker in the spring of 2011 . After the tenure of Pep Guardiola , Gerland remained assistant coach of Bayern Munich under Carlo Ancelotti .

In February 2017 it was announced that Gerland would leave the coaching team of Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the 2016/17 season and, together with Jochen Sauer, would take over the management of the new youth training center of FC Bayern. In particular, Gerland's undisputed merits in the past for the club and its youth work were decisive for him to take over the sporting management in the new NLZ.

From October 2017 Gerland stopped working in the junior division in order to assist the professional team coach Jupp Heynckes until the end of the 2017/18 season . After Heynckes' engagement in Munich had ended for the following season, Gerland returned to the position of sporting director.

After Hansi Flick took over the position of head coach of the first team from Niko Kovač on the 11th matchday of the 2019/20 season , Gerland became his assistant and achieved the triple for the second time after the interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2020 from the championship, DFB-Pokal and Champions League.

Following the 2020/21 season, Holger Seitz , as Gerland's successor, will become the sports director of the FC Bayern Campus, while he will focus exclusively on the role of assistant coach.

In his short film “The Tiger in Munich” (2008), Andreas Leimbach-Niaz succeeds in getting Gerland, known as gnarled and taciturn, to talk. At the short film competition of the football film festival in Berlin , “The Tiger in Munich” was awarded the Golden Elf . Patrick Loewenstein from the Netzeitung describes the film and the event in detail.

Andreas Bach also conducted an open and detailed interview with Gerland for his documentary “Main thing football - young professionals on the way into the game”, an unabridged bonus material that was added to the DVD.

Due to its popularity with Bayern fans, the municipal stadium on Grünwalder Strasse , home of the second team of FC Bayern Munich, was nicknamed “Hermann-Gerland-Kampfbahn”.

As coach of the Bayern amateurs, Gerland later developed national players such as Philipp Lahm , Bastian Schweinsteiger , Thomas Müller , Holger Badstuber or David Alaba , all of whom made the leap from youth to the professional team.
