Werner Balte (born February 17, 1948 in Bochum ; † March 17, 2007 ) was a German football player .

Career

Werner Balte played for VfL Bochum from 1966 to 1977 and scored 95 goals in 276 games, including 38 goals in 170 games in the Bundesliga . His greatest sporting success was reaching the DFB Cup final in 1968 , which VfL lost 4-1 to 1. FC Köln . On June 20, 1971 Balte scored the fourth goal of the month in the game of the promotion round to the Bundesliga of VfL against Tasmania Berlin . After goalkeeper Horst Grunenberg had thrown the ball into the air to tee off , Balte carried the released play equipment into the Berlin goal.

He later worked as a coach, including in the youth department of VfL Bochum , where he discovered players like Martin Kree and Frank Heinemann .

Werner Balte died at the age of 59 after a serious illness. A minute's silence was held in his honor before the Bundesliga match between VfL Bochum and Hannover 96 on April 1, 2007.
