Holger Badstuber (born March 13, 1989 in Memmingen ) is a German soccer player . His regular position is that of the central defender ; but he is also used as a left full -back. Badstuber has been playing for VfB Stuttgart since the 2017/18 season , for which he was already active in his youth. Before that, he had played for Bayern Munich for more than 14 years and for half a year on loan for FC Schalke 04 .

Origin and school education

Holger Badstuber grew up in Rot an der Rot in the Biberach district as one of two siblings. His parents supported him early on in his football career and regularly accompanied him to training in Stuttgart and later in Munich . His father died of cancer in March 2009, a few weeks after his son's first professional contract came about. In Munich Badstuber made his at boarding school of FC Bayern Munich University student . Badstuber did his community service at the Bavarian State School for the Physically Disabled.

From the youth of TSV Rot an der Rot 1890 e. V. emerged, Badstuber got through the youth department of VfB Stuttgart 2002 to the youth of FC Bayern Munich. In the 2006/07 season he played with Bayern's A-Juniors in the A-Juniors Bundesliga and was used there in 20 games. Bayern won the South / Southwest relay and reached the final round of the German championship. In the final round Badstuber had three more missions and scored one goal . In the final against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , however, he and his team just lost 2-1 after extra time. At the age of 18, Badstuber made the move to the amateurs in 2007, for whom he scored four goals in 23 games in the third-class Regionalliga Süd in 2007/08 .

Badstuber was used by the amateurs as a defensive midfielder to improve his overview of the field. After the introduction of the third division as the new third highest division in summer 2008, Badstuber played there 32 times and scored three goals. After he had already completed part of the pre-season 2008/09 with the professional squad of the record champions, he signed a professional contract valid until 2011 on February 1, 2009. Badstuber played his first Bundesliga game on August 8, 2009 (1st matchday) in a 1-1 draw at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ; he played 90 minutes. His 2-1 home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach on December 4, 2009 meant the final score and was also his first Bundesliga goal. At the beginning of 2010, Badstuber's contract with FC Bayern Munich was prematurely extended to 2014. In his first Bundesliga season he became a regular player and played 49 competitive games, including the Champions League final , which was lost 2-0 to Inter Milan . Despite this defeat, Badstuber closed the season successfully by winning the double from the German championship and the DFB Cup . With Badstuber's good performance, FC Bayern Munich made it back to the Champions League final in the 2011/12 season . Badstuber was not involved in the defeat against Chelsea because he was suspended because of his third yellow card from the semi-final second leg against Real Madrid .

Injuries

On November 28, 2012, the 14th matchday of the 2012/13 season , Badstuber played his 100th Bundesliga game. In the following Bundesliga game on December 1, 2012 against Borussia Dortmund , he tore a cruciate ligament in the 35th minute and was initially out for about six months. In February 2013, he extended his contract with FC Bayern Munich for a further three years until 2017. Due to an additional rupture during the healing process , the injury break was extended until August 17, 2014. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he went on several missions , but failed again for the remainder of the year after a muscle tendon tore in his left thigh after September 13, 2014. In the winter training camp in January 2015, Badstuber returned to team training and was back in the FC Bayern squad for the first time on January 30, 2015. On February 14, 2015 he was in the starting line-up against Hamburger SV and made his comeback in an 8-0 win.

On March 11, 2015, Badstuber scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League in the last 16 against Shakhtar Donetsk in a 7-0 home win with a 5-0 goal in the 63rd minute . During the second leg of the quarter-finals against FC Porto on April 21, 2015, he tore a muscle in his thigh. On October 15, 2015, he returned to team training after his rehab. After Badstuber had been back in the squad for the first time since April 21, 2015 against Arsenal on November 4, 2015 , he finally made his comeback on November 7, 2015 in a 4-0 home win against VfB Stuttgart , when he was 59 .Minute came on for Thomas Müller . On February 13, 2016, he broke his ankle during training and was operated on the same day. As a result, he fell out again for the rest of the season. Before the 2016/17 season he got back into team training and made his comeback in a game against AC Milan on July 27, 2016 as part of the pre-season season. On October 26, 2016, Badstuber played in a 3-1 home win in the DFB Cup against FC Augsburg for the first time since February 2016 when he came on for Mats Hummels in the 81st minute .

Loan to FC Schalke 04

During the winter break of the 2016/17 season , Badstuber left FC Bayern Munich after fourteen and a half years and joined FC Schalke 04 until the end of the season . Both clubs communicated the transfer as a loan. However, his contract with Bayern Munich, which expired at the end of the season, was not extended.

After sitting on the bench in the first two competitive games of his new team, he was in the starting line-up of FC Schalke 04 in the away game against FC Bayern Munich on February 4, 2017. During the season, Badstuber could not face Schalke center- back Benedikt Höwedes and Matija Nastasić prevail. Even before the end of the season, he agreed with FC Schalke 04 not to extend the cooperation beyond the season.

Return to VfB Stuttgart

For the 2017/18 season , Bundesliga promoted VfB Stuttgart signed him and provided him with a contract that ran until June 30, 2018. He came under the head coach Hannes Wolf and his successor Tayfun Korkut in 27 league games (24 times from the start) and scored 2 goals.

After his original contract had already expired, Holger Badstuber returned to VfB Stuttgart after 10 days in July 2018 and signed a contract with the Swabians until June 30, 2021. In the 2018/19 season , Badstuber came under Korkut, Markus Weinzierl and Nico Willingly only 10 times (5 times in the starting line-up) in the Bundesliga. He was also used for the full season in the relegation second leg against Union Berlin , in which VfB was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga .

In the 2019/20 season , the central defender appeared under Tim Walter and Pellegrino Matarazzo in 19 second division games (all of them in the starting line-up) and scored 2 goals. The VfB managed the direct promotion as second place.

During the summer preparations for 2020, Badstuber was transferred from Matarazzo to the second team , which plays in the fourth-class Regionalliga Südwest .

National team

On November 14, 2007 Badstuber made his debut in the U19 national team in a 1-0 win against England. He played his second and last game on May 27, 2008 in a 5-2 win against Slovakia. On September 3, 2008 he played for the first time in the U20 national team in a 4-2 victory over Austria. Badstuber canceled his participation in the U20 World Cup in Egypt in September 2009 in order not to lose his regular place in the Bundesliga. On August 11, 2009 he played for the U21 national team for the first time when he came on for Mats Hummels in the 59th minute of the 3-1 defeat against Turkey . He scored his first goal in the U21's 3-0 victory over Slovenia on October 9, 2009.

Appointed to the extended squad for the 2010 World Cup by national coach Joachim Löw on May 6, 2010 , he made his debut in the senior national team on May 29 in Budapest in a 3-0 win in the international test match against Hungary when he was in the 71st minute came on for Arne Friedrich . He played his only World Cup games against Australia on June 13 and against Serbia on June 18, 2010. Against Serbia he was substituted in the 77th minute for Mario Gómez . Because of his problems with his opponent Miloš Krasić took in the following games Jérôme Boateng and in the final stages Marcell Jansen his position. At the European Championships Badstuber was a regular player in central defense and completed all five games of the German team over the full distance until they were defeated in the semi-finals. He was used in the first four games of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , but missed the rest of the qualification and the final tournament in Brazil due to his injuries.

On March 20, 2015, he was nominated for the DFB team's games against Australia and Georgia for the first time since October 2012.

Together with Marcell Jansen and Nuri Şahin, Badstuber supported the nationwide mathematics competition Mathe macht das Tor . For several years now, he has also been involved in the Christmas parcel campaign Gift with a Heart (initiated by the non-governmental organization humedica e.V. in cooperation with the Münchner Tafel e.V.) for children in need.
