Career as a player

In the club

Borussia Monchengladbach

Jansen at Borussia

Marcell Jansen moved from SV Mönchengladbach in 1993 to the youth department of Borussia Mönchengladbach and went through all youth teams. In May 2004 Jansen played for the first time with the amateurs in the fourth-class Oberliga Nordrhein . He played his first Bundesliga game on December 4, 2004 (16th matchday of the 2004/05 season ) in the 6-0 defeat in the away game against Hertha BSC . During the winter break of the 2004/05 season , Dick Advocaat signed him to the professional squad of Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the second half of the season he prevailed against his teammates Filip Daems and team captain Christian Ziege and was used in every game. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on April 3, 2005 (27th matchday) in a 2-2 home game against VfL Bochum with the goal to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute. On May 14, 2005 (33rd matchday) he contributed in the 0-0 home game against Hertha BSC to 15th place in the table and thus to early relegation to league rivals VfL Bochum.

In the 2005/06 season , in which Borussia Mönchengladbach was mostly in the upper half of the table and played for the European Cup, Jansen played 32 of 34 Bundesliga games (31 times in the starting XI) and scored three goals. In the 2006/07 season , in which the team played unlike in the previous season continuously against relegation, Jansen completed 23 games and scored one goal. After six match days in the starting eleven, he was no longer used for the rest of the first half of the season. In the second half of the season he played all 17 games. He was changed once. In the end, Borussia Mönchengladbach rose from bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga .

FC Bayern Munich

Before the 2007/08 season , Jansen moved to Bayern Munich and received a four-year contract. At the record champions he was at times a regular player and was almost continuously in the starting line-up from the 5th to the 11th matchday and from the 22nd to the 34th matchday. Before the first Bundesliga game on August 11, 2007 in a 3-0 home win against Hansa Rostock , Jansen played three league cup games and one of three DFB cup games . He also played ten UEFA Cup games. At the end of the season he won the German championship and the DFB Cup with Bayern Munich . In the UEFA Cup, however, he was eliminated with the team in the semifinals against Russian champions Zenit Saint Petersburg .

Hamburger SV

Marcell Jansen during the training of HSV (2013)

After just one year, Jansen left FC Bayern Munich and switched to league rivals Hamburger SV at the end of August 2008 , with whom he signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2013. He played his first game for the Hanseatic League on August 30, 2008 (3rd matchday) in a 4-2 win in the away game against Arminia Bielefeld . On February 22, 2009 (21st matchday), Hamburger SV won 2-1 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen , both goals were scored by Jansen - his first goal and his first double goal in the Bundesliga. Across all competitions, he scored four goals, gave five assists and took fifth place in the championship with HSV, which qualified for participation in the Europa League . In the UEFA Cup, the predecessor of the Europa League, Hamburg advanced to the semi-finals , in which they lost 3: 3 in the north derby against Werder Bremen due to the away goals rule ; Jansen had played 11 of the 14 games. In the DFB Cup, too, he and his club were only eliminated in the semi-finals and again against Werder Bremen with 1: 3 on penalties .

Despite an early injury, the 2009/10 season is considered the best of his career: Jansen scored six goals in 18 league games. In the Europa League, HSV reached the semi-finals again , but lost after the 0-0 against Fulham with 1: 2 there in the second leg; in that competition he scored three goals in eight games. In the following season , Jansen's missions were limited by numerous injuries and illnesses, so that he could not play a game between the 9th and 20th matchday. While Jansen only made 16 games and scored twice, Dennis Aogo was his opponent in defense.

In the 2011/12 season , Jansen was used 29 times, including 26 times in the starting line-up. He prevailed against his competitor Aogo at the beginning of the season. In addition to a template after being substituted on in the first game, he scored five goals. In the 2012/13 season he played 28 games in the starting line-up, made three assists and scored one goal. In the 2013/14 season , the new HSV coach Bert van Marwijk Jansen promoted to captain HSV as a replacement for the injured Rafael van der Vaart . After he was not used in four of seven games under coach Thorsten Fink , Jansen scored his first goal of the season in the first game under van Marwijk at 2-2 on September 28, 2013 (7th matchday) in the away game against Eintracht Frankfurt. Under van Marwijk, Jansen was only not used in one Bundesliga game. Shortly after signing Mirko Slomka , Jansen was out until the end of the season due to an international injury and therefore only made 20 appearances plus four assists and one goal. On the 32nd matchday he made his comeback against FC Augsburg . During that season he was used in a total of 21 games. HSV took 16th place with 27 points and qualified for participation in the relegation, in which the Hanseatic League beat SpVgg Greuther Fürth (0: 0/1: 1).

A season later , he was used on the first two match days before he was canceled due to a torn muscle fiber in the adductor area. As a result, he was used in all games up to and including the eleventh game day. Then he fell out because of adductor problems for the remaining games of the first half of the season. On January 31, 2015, he made his return on the 18th matchday in the home game against 1. FC Köln . From the 22nd to 27th matchday Jansen was out due to a torn muscle fiber. On April 25, 2015 he made his comeback in the 3-2 win on matchday 30 against FC Augsburg when he came on for Ivo Ilicevic in the 67th minute . Jansen played his last game as an active player on May 15, 2015 on the 33rd match day at VfB Stuttgart ; for the last game against FC Schalke 04 he was out due to a muscle strain. HSV occupied 16th place in the table with a 2-0 win on the last match day against FC Schalke 04 and thus qualified again for the relegation in which they prevailed against Karlsruher SC . Jansen's contract with HSV ran until June 30, 2015. After the contract expired, he left the club and announced his retirement in July 2015 at the age of 29. He announced that he only sees football as a hobby and has new projects in mind, like a start-up . Former national player and sports director of Bayer 04 Leverkusen Rudi Völler criticized Jansen's early retirement. Völler: “I don't understand that. Anyone who does something like this has never loved football ”. Jansen: “Mr. Völler was right, I never loved the soccer business but accepted it, because the soccer business made a lot possible for me and I'm very grateful for that! Nevertheless, I can say that my life was at least as worth living before my career as a professional! "

Comeback as an amateur

After Jansen had already participated several times in the training of the third team of HSV, which is not part of the professional department , but part of the club's popular sports program, he received a player pass during the winter break of the 2017/18 season and was named on January 30, 2018 as " Newcomer ”presented. Jansen announced that he wanted to train with the team as often as possible, but initially left an assignment in the fifth-class Hamburg Oberliga open due to the "sometimes very good" level. He had one starting eleven and three short appearances by the end of the season. At the end of the season, Jansen and the team were relegated to the Hamburg regional league .

“When my hobby turned into a job at the age of 18, I lost it. But I've always wished that I could get football back as a hobby. "

In the national team

Marcell Jansen (r.) And Bastian Schweinsteiger at the 2010 World Cup

On November 16, 2004 Jansen played for the first time in the national jersey of the U-21 national team in Cottbus against the selection of the Polish team (1-1). On February 8, 2005 he scored in Wrexham with the hit to the 4-0 final against the Welsh selection, his only international goal for this national team.

On September 3, 2005, he made his 45-minute A-international debut when he came on as a substitute in Bratislava in a friendly against Slovakia for the second half. He was one of six other missions, including five in the starting XI, before the tournament as the youngest player to line-up of the senior team for the 2006 World Cup . In the game for third place against the selection of Portugal , he was used for the first time at a World Cup; he also played his first competitive game. On August 14, 2006, like all players in the World Cup, he was honored with the silver laurel leaf .

After the World Cup, he took part in eight of the twelve qualifying matches for the finals of the 2008 European Championship . He scored his first international goal on June 2, 2007 in a 6-0 win against San Marino . For the European Championships in 2008 he was called up again by national coach Joachim Loew in the squad of the national team. During the tournament he took part in five of the six German games, but only in the opening game against the selection of Poland over the full season, and was runner-up in Europe.

Due to an injury, Jansen only played two of ten qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup. In the 4-0 win over Liechtenstein on March 28, 2009, he scored his second international goal. He didn't play any other game before preparing for the World Cup , but was nominated for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . He was used four times, including three substitutions against Ghana , Argentina and Spain . In the game for third place against the selection of Uruguay , Jansen then played for the first time from the start. His third goal in his career to 2-2 meant not only the equalization, but also his first goal during a World Cup. Germany won the game 3-2 and took third place.

After the first European Championship qualifier in Brussels in September 2010 against the selection of Belgium , he was not considered for almost three years, and was also not part of the squad for the European Championship 2012 . On March 24, 2013 he received another invitation for the DFB selection when he was subsequently nominated by national coach Löw for the World Cup qualifying game on March 26, 2013 in the Frankenstadion in Nuremberg against the selection of Kazakhstan . He was substituted on for Marco Reus in stoppage time and was back on a regular basis in the months that followed. He played in seven of the nine remaining games in the 2013 calendar year. He benefited above all from the fact that Jérôme Boateng was used in central defense and Philipp Lahm moved to the right outside for him. This cleared the left space for Jansen and his competitor Marcel Schmelzer .

On March 5, 2014, in the last game before the squad nomination for the 2014 World Cup against the selection of Chile , he played for the German national team for the last time; As in a few games before, he was in the starting line-up. Mauricio Isla kicked him on the ankle in a duel . Jansen tore the outer ligament in his right ankle. Despite a long injury break, he was appointed to the provisional squad for the World Cup on May 8, 2014, two weeks after his return to the Bundesliga. However, due to the relegation games to keep Hamburger SV relegated, he was unable to present himself at the friendly against Poland and was finally removed from the squad before the training camp. Marcell Jansen is (as of March 7, 2020) the last German national team player who was under contract with HSV.
