Wolfgang Klein (football official)

Wolfgang Klein (born January 28, 1941 in Hanover ; † September 15, 2017 in Hamburg ) was a German athlete , television presenter, doctor of law and lawyer, and sports official.

Career

After graduating from high school, Klein studied law and was also a track and field athlete. He also wrote articles for the Hamburger Abendblatt . In 1957 he came to the Nordschau sports show as a moderator , which he moderated for 15 years. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he reached 10th place in the long jump with 7.15 m. He was also twice German champion in this discipline. His longest jump was 7.90 m. After completing his studies, he worked in a commercial law firm, wrote a dissertation in the field of commercial law and then worked as a lawyer in his own law firm in Hamburg-Rotherbaum .

From 1979 to 1987 he was President of Hamburger SV . Under the aegis of Klein, HSV won the German championship in 1982 and 1983 with manager Günter Netzer and coach Ernst Happel , who was hired by him, and came second four times. In addition, there was the victory in the DFB Cup in 1987 and the highlight was winning the European Cup in 1983. In 1980, Klein brought Franz Beckenbauer from New York Cosmos to Hamburg. As early as 1987, Klein spoke out in favor of making the Hamburg Volksparkstadion “much more comfortable” and making efforts to increase the number of HSV members. For a long time, Wolfgang Klein also worked for the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation . In November 1987 Ernst Naumann was elected as his successor at HSV.

Wolfgang Klein cultivated a confident, skilful and intimate relationship with the media, especially with the writing guild. Early on in the 1980s, the media professional and President Klein took on the criticism-prone treatment of ARD Sportschau coverage of Bundesliga clubs. Klein died on September 15, 2017 of cancer .
