Paul Benthien

Paul Benthien (born May 30, 1914 in Hamburg ; † June 24, 1982 ibid) was a successful German table tennis player . In 1933 he became German individual champion. From 1975 to 1979 he was the 24th president of the Hamburg sports club .

Paul Benthien was the older brother of Heinz Benthien (who also became German champion in 1944). During his commercial training from 1932 to 1934 Paul competed 13 times for the German national team. He played for Hamburger SV all his life .

From 1965 to 1968 the full-time independent general agent Benthien was treasurer of Hamburger SV. On July 1, 1975, he was elected President of the HSV with 284 votes, 28 abstentions and 2 votes against. He replaced Peter Krohn , who had been in office since 1973 , and who gave up his honorary position in favor of the paid function of general manager. In 1978, Benthien hired Günter Netzer as a manager. In 1979 Hamburger SV became German champions for the fourth time under coach Branko Zebec . December 18, 1979, Paul Benthien handed over the chairmanship of the club to Wolfgang Klein, his favorite, who defeated Peter Krohn, who had retired as manager in 1977, in a ballot.

In 1982 Benthien died after a serious illness. He was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery.
