The Hamburger SV is a sports club from Hamburg . The table tennis department of HSV was founded in 1927 and since then has played its home games mainly in the Hamburg district of Eppendorf .

history

After a short time, the club advanced to the top German men's. With Paul Benthien a player of the HSV became German single champion as early as 1933 . A year later, Erich Deisler , another HSV player, won the German title in the men's singles. In addition to Paul's brother Heinz Benthien , Reinhard Küver, Ernst Perl, Hermann Hell and Werner Stehr, these two were also part of the HSV team that brought the German team championship title to the Elbe in 1937 and 1938, something that no other Hamburg club has achieved in the men's category since then . Also in 1939 the leap into the final of the German championship succeeded again, but it was lost to the Post SV Wien . During the Second World War , Heinz Benthien became German champion in 1944.

After the end of the war, HSV was initially in the shadow of the newly founded Eppendorf local rival TTC Rot-Weiß Hamburg . Both women and men commuted between the Oberliga Nord, at that time the highest German division, and the city league. While the women were unable to establish themselves nationally in the long term despite the reinforcement by the former German champion Ursula Paulsen , the men managed to regain their leadership role at Hamburg level and establish themselves in the top division since the mid-1950s. However, the desired qualification for the table tennis Bundesliga, founded in 1966, failed. In 1969 (behind Tennis Borussia ) and 1971 (behind Hertha BSC ) they won the runner-up in the league, but the Berliners were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the Bundesliga. It was not until 1972 that HSV reached the promotion round as league champions, but had to be content with the last place behind TuS Nachrodt , TSV Milbertshofen and 1. FC Saarbrücken (1: 5 points). A year later, he was even relegated to the Hamburg City League. It was not until 1984 that they were promoted to the now third-class Oberliga Nord. In 1991 he was promoted to the Regionalliga Nord.

From 1999 to 2007, the first men's team played in the second Bundesliga north . Although the team had reached a midfield position in 2007 as well, the club waived a report for the second division for the new season for financial reasons and now entered the Regionalliga Nord. There the team won the season in 2014 and qualified for the newly created 3rd Bundesliga. Due to financial problems, however, the HSV dissolved the performance team and withdrew to the 1st district league, where the first of now only two men's teams played in the 2014/15 season. In the 2018/19 season, HSV again has four men's teams, with the first team playing in the 2nd regional league.

successes

In addition to the two German team championships in 1937 and 1938 and the runner-up title in 1939, many HSV players achieved success in national championships. The following medals could be won at the German Championships :
