Josef Wenninghoff

Josef Wenninghoff ( February 12, 1937 - February 19, 2017 ) was a German table tennis player . He was German mixed master and took part in the 1957 World Cup.

youth

Wenninghoff played for the TTV Metelen club . In 1953 and 1954 he won several titles with the West German Table Tennis Association WTTV and at the DTTB level:

  • 1953: German youth champion in singles
  • 1953/54: West German champion in singles, doubles (with Klemens Tietmeyer ) and mixed (with Maria Klein )
  • 1954: German youth champion in singles

As a 15-year-old Wenninghoff was integrated into the men's team of TTV Metelen, which at that time competed in the top German division, the Oberliga , and was German cup winner in 1958 and German team champion in 1959.

Adults

With this team he was German cup winner in 1958, German champion in 1959 and German runner-up in 1960. He also achieved several good placements at the German individual championships. With Ulla Paulsen he became German mixed champion in 1957, and the couple reached the semi-finals a year later. In doubles he made it to the final twice, namely in 1955 with Leo Jungeburth and 1957 with Bernie Vossebein . With Vossebein he finished third in the 1959 DM. In 1958 he had won the West German championship in doubles with him.

In 1955 Wenninghoff was ranked 11th in the German ranking.

An international success was winning the double competition with Bernie Vossebein at the international championships in Luxembourg. In 1957 he was nominated for the individual competitions of the World Cup in Stockholm. Here the well-rehearsed double with Bernie Vossebein advanced three rounds through victories over Mahomed Cassim Peer / Mohamed Goolam Hoosen Molla (South Africa), Bjorn Olov Karlsson / Leif Bergman (Sweden) and Sebastiao Coelho / Antonio Osorio (Portugal) before it went to the Hungarians Ferenc Sidó / Elemer Gyetvay failed. Wenninghoff was eliminated in the first round against Einar Lyttik (Denmark).

For his success, Wenninghoff was awarded the Silver Badge of Honor by the West German Table Tennis Association in 1965 and the Golden Badge of Honor of the West German Table Tennis Association WTTV in 1989.
