Harold Pupkewitz

Harold Pupkewitz (born July 14, 1915 in Vilnius , Russian Empire , † April 27, 2012 in Windhoek ) was a Namibian businessman and company manager with Lithuanian roots and Jewish faith .

Pupkewitz held a B. Comm from the University of Cape Town in 1935 after attending Windhoek High School in Namibia from 1929-1932.

Life

In 1924, living conditions for Jews in Lithuania deteriorated significantly. Harold Pupkewitz and his family moved from Vilnius to Namibia (then still South West Africa ) in March 1925 . His father Max had been working as a cart manufacturer since 1902 . Harold has worked in and for the family business all his life since the family business was founded in 1925. From 1937 to 1985 he was on his own farm agriculturally active.

He was married to Ethel , née Meyerovitz , since December 14, 1952 . The marriage had two children, Anthony (Tony), an internationally known photographer and Meryl Barry, an artist living in Namibia. Both are still involved in the company.

Career

Pupkewitz was, among other things, chairman and managing director of Pupkewitz Holdings since 1936 and was considered the richest Namibian. In addition, Pupkewitz sat on numerous boards and advisory positions; since 1997 he has been the President's personal advisor . He was known for enjoying his work and was considered a workaholic until his death .

In 2008, Pupkewitz supported the establishment of the Harold Pupkewitz Graduate School of Business at the Namibia University of Science and Technology, named after him, with 10 million Namibian dollars .

  • 2004: Laureate of the Namibian Business Hall of Fame
