The Namibian Dollar , actually English Namibia Dollar , ( N $ or NAD ) is the currency of Namibia and was introduced in 1993, three years after independence. The Namibian dollar replaced the South African Rand (R or ZAR), which was also valid in Namibia, as the official currency.

Namibia forms the Common Monetary Area with South Africa , Lesotho and Swaziland . There is a 1: 1 parity between all currencies of these countries (Rand, Loti , Lilangeni and Namibia Dollar) . In addition, the Rand is recognized legal tender throughout Namibia.

Since 1993 banknotes to the value of 100, 50 and 10 Namibia dollars, coins in values of 5 and 1 Namibia dollars and 50, 10 and 5 cents (abolished in 2019) have been in circulation . Since 1996, a banknote with a value of 20 has been in circulation, since 2001 also with a value of 200 Namibia dollars and since March 21, 2020 with a value of 30 Namibia dollars.

Dollars or marks?

Trial coin of 10 marks

When planning the introduction of a new currency after independence (1990), the newly founded Bank of Namibia initially coined test sentences, which were then submitted to the Windhoek Ministry of Finance . Since the name of the new currency had apparently not yet been decided, the samples were carried out in both dollars and marks . The decision was then in favor of the dollar.

The sample sets with an edition of 1000 pieces comprised four different coins : 1 mark, 1 dollar (both in cupernickel ), 10 marks and 10 dollars (both in silver ). A sitting lion is depicted on the obverse of the coins denominated in Mark , the dollar series shows a person from the San tribe with a bow and arrow , plus the value and the note "PROBE" / "ESSAI". The reverse of the 1 mark and 1 dollar coins still shows the old coat of arms of Namibia between two ears of wheat , the inscription "NAMIBIA" and the year "1990". On the otherwise identically designed reverse of the 10-mark and 10-dollar coins, instead of the ears of corn, the inscription “INDEPENDENCE” ( English independence ) and “INDEPENDENCE” can be found.

Commemorative special coin as a means of payment

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Bank of Namibia , two special coins were presented on July 16, 2010. One coin is legal tender with the equivalent of N $ 10. It shows the portrait of the founder of the state Sam Nujoma and the coat of arms of Namibia on the reverse. Five million of these were minted.

A second commemorative coin with a printing value of N $ 20 was minted as a pure commemorative coin in a number of only 200 pieces. The central bank's anniversary logo is located on this.

In addition, the following special coins were issued:

  • N $ 1 made of copper silk- nickel, N $ 10 made of silver, N $ 100 made of gold on the occasion of the Miss Universe 1995 election in Namibia
  • N $ 10 in silver and N $ 100 in gold for the 1994 Olympic Games
  • N 1 made of copper silk-nickel, N $ 10 and N $ 20 made of silver and N $ 100 made of gold for the protection of marine animals 1998

Banknotes

On March 21, 2012, for the 22nd anniversary of independence, new banknotes with the same denominations , but with increased security features and a new layout, were presented. In particular, the 10 and 20 dollar banknotes have been changed as they now bear the likeness of Founding President Sam Nujoma . The new banknotes came into circulation on May 15, 2012. On June 3, 2013, the Bank of Namibia announced that the 10 and 20 dollar bills of the new series would be replaced by a new issue due to the destruction of the diamond-shaped security feature when folding and the general premature aging of the banknotes. On June 12, 2013 it was announced that the issue would begin on June 17, 2013. In the improved edition, security features no. 1 (diamond) and no. 2 (information "BON 10" and "BON 20") have swapped places.

Since October 2015, modified banknotes worth N $ 10 and N $ 20 have been issued. On the front, the diamond was removed as the main visible feature, the back remained unchanged.

history

10 marks of the imperial governorate in German South West Africa

Before the Namibian dollar, the pound sterling had been legal tender since the mid-1910s , the South African pound from 1922 and the South African rand from 1961. At the time of German South West Africa, the gold mark , from 1914 onwards a “cash receipt” (Seitz notes) commissioned by Governor Theodor Seitz, was used as emergency money . It was printed by the Swakopmund bookshop .
