In 1977 the Kwanza (divided into 100 Lwei, Lw ) replaced the Escudo . The exchange campaign took place between January 8 and 10, 1977, subject to prior secrecy. In this context, on the evening of January 7, the borders with Namibia , Zambia and Zaire were closed and the air and sea routes were interrupted.

In 1990 the new Kwanza (novo kwanza, AON) was introduced. The exchange ratio to the old Kwanza (AOK) was 1: 1, but the exchange rate was limited in order to combat inflation . During the currency reform of 1995, 1000 Kwanzas were exchanged for the Kwanza Reajustado (AOR), which was divided into 100 Cêntimos. In 1999, 1,000,000 Kwanza Reajustado were exchanged for the current Kwanza (AOA) in a new currency reform. It is also divided into 100 cêntimos .

In 2020 the new banknote series "2020" will be introduced, which consists of plastic notes. They have the values 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 Kwanzas and are made in Germany, the USA and Russia.

The name of the currency denominations was derived from the Kwanza River and its tributary Lwei .
