It replaced the East African shilling as the national currency in 1967 . Until 1975 it was pegged to the US dollar . In 1986 a new Uganda shilling was introduced, which could be exchanged for a value of 100 old shillings.

Banknotes are issued for 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 UGS, coins are available for 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 UGS.

In practice, in addition to the shilling, the US dollar and the British pound are also used.
