The Mauritian rupee is the currency of the island republic of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean . One rupee is divided into 100 cents . The ISO code is MUR.

Regular course coins are available with the values: 1, 5, 20 and 50 cents, as well as 1, 5 and 10 rupees. In 2007 a 20 rupee bimetal coin was issued to mark the 40th anniversary of the Central Bank of Mauritius. It is also in circulation and is valid for payment transactions.

There are banknotes in denominations of 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 rupees. Since 2013, the values ​​25, 50 and 500 rupees have been issued as polymer banknotes .

Rupee is a South Asian name for currencies that is found in India , Pakistan and Indonesia , among others . A large part of the population in Mauritius comes from immigrants from India, who in turn introduced the Indian rupee en masse. The British colonial power wanted to put a stop to this process and therefore introduced the Mauritian rupee as regular currency from 1876.
